UNH head coach Dick Umile said they have put extra emphasis on coming out with a bang, making an impression, and finishing it so there are no doubts.

“It feels great. We were determined to start the season off right and make a statement that our program likes to be competing in the top,” Umile said. “And we missed that last year so are determined to get back in it. We are going to take it one game at a time and worry about Hockey East right now.”

Though UNH has only competed in one conference game so far this season, they have showcased their talent across the board. They have scored 13 goals in their first three games, with eight different goal scorers spanning from freshman to senior, first line to fourth. UNH has three power play goals so far this season and have let up only one against them.

Both Umile and BU head coach Jack Parker said that they like what they see in the Wildcats this year, and a lot of it has to do with not only talent, but the balance on the team.

“I talked to [Umile] last night, and I told him I like his team. He said, ‘Yeah, I’m not sure where the goals are coming from,’ and what did they hit, five pipes tonight? They are going to score some goals.”

Not only did they score some goals, but they had a solid performance from sophomore goaltender Casey DeSmith who picked up his third win of the season, with a 24-save effort tonight.

After letting up a tough goal less than a minute into the game, he seemed to calm down and gave the Wildcats a way to win down the stretch. Coming into the season, DeSmith was put as the number one goalie for the first time in his collegiate career. After following former goaltender Matt DiGirolamo last year, he has stepped up into his role seemingly flawless.

“I welcome the challenge,” DeSmith said. “When it’s my net to lose, I know I have to play well and I build off that and feed off that. I work harder and am more focused. So when it’s my net to lose it’s a benefit for me and not as much pressure.”

UNH will play host to the Northeastern Huskies on Friday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. The Huskies currently sit 2-1-0 overall.

Here we sit, with just two days to go before the 2012-2013 regular season was supposed to begin, and NHL fans are feeling, well, underwhelmed. However, despite the lack of the NHL, hockey fans can still tune into some games overseas, including today's matchup between the Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara and Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin.

Again, though it is underwhelming, for any hockey fan, watching these two suit up against each other is always a treat, especially after last season where the Bruins fell in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to the Capitals in seven games.

The game will be aired on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. where the KHL's Dynamo Moscow (Ovechkin) will square off with Lev Praha (Chara). Dynamo Moscow is currently in second place, while Lev Praha sits in fourth.

Lev Praha also features the injured Jakub Voracek from the Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames center Jiri Hudler.

Remember when everyone was excited for the Bruins to go play in Prague a couple years ago? Well, this is kind of like that, except it's just Bruins captain Zdeno Chara heading over there, and he won't be playing in a spoked-B jersey-- he'll be playing for the KHL until the lockout is over.

Announced by his agent earlier this afternoon, one the Boston's favorites is following in the footsteps of his teammates, and is lacing up his skates closer to home.

"He has friends there, and it's within hours of his home in Slovakia and it's a great hockey city," agent Matt Keator said.

He will be playing with the Lev Praha (Prague Lions), and you can bet they'll be okay with the 6'9" defenseman joining their team.

Chara is now the sixth Bruins player to head overseas. This is all on the brink of the NHL announcing the cancellation of the first regular season games.

Another one bites the dust, and this time it's Rich Peverley who will travel abroad to play some hockey this season.

Peverley, who proved to have a big role on the team last year, and who signed a 3-year contract extension with the Bruins at the beginning of last season will play for JYP in the SM-liiga while the NHL continues to be in conversation with the NHLPA.

While Peverley is the newest Bruins player to take the plunge, another teammate, Nathan Horton will not play during the Lockout. After being injured for the last half of the season with a concussion, the Bruins forward has opted to stay off the ice during discussions.

Peverley is the fifth Bruin to jump ship (or perhaps just jump on a floating vessel) so far since the NHL locked out in mid-September. While labor negotiations don't seem to be going anywhere any time soon, the rest have stayed put for now.

Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced earlier this evening that center Zach Hamill will no longer don the spoked B, and will head south to join the Washington Capitals this offseason. In return, Boston picked up 26-year-old forward Chris Bourque, son of Bruins Hall-of-Famer, Ray Bourque.
↵
Hamill finished this last season with the Bruins with only two points in 16 games. After being drafted 8th overall by the Bruins in the 2007 NHL draft, Hamill had shown some signs of improvement, but it wasn't enough for Chiarelli to keep him around. Along with his two points this season, the 23-year-old had four penalty minutes. He also played 41 games with the Providence Bruins where he picked up 21 points.
↵
Meanwhile Bourque had 27-66=93 point this season with the Hershey Bears, and accumulated 42 penalty minutes. Stacking up at 5'8 and 180-lbs, the Boston native has the opportunity to make himself a new name in Beantown and add even more history to the Bourque name here.
↵
For more Boston Bruins coverage, visit our team page and blog, Stanley Cup of Chowder.

They had been there so many times before--one of the most exciting, albeit nauseating games in sports--Game 7 of a Stanley Cup Playoff round.

In fact, last year in the their remarkable playoff run towards the Stanley Cup, they played three series that went to seven games, including the Stanley Cup Final itself. This series against the number seven seed in the conference should be nothing compared to those, right?

Not when you factor the exhaustion. Not the physical exhaustion of playing in a seven game series, with four of those games going into overtime. But the mental anxiety that carries over from a short summer and through a long, long season.

As the game started and continued through the first period, there was something missing that was so clearly evident in last year's run. They looked tired and they failed to have that same spark that ran through the entire bench last year.

As has been customary for this series, the Capitals started the scoring midway through the first period when Matt Hendricks fired a shot through at 11:23, giving Washington a familiar lead.

Tyler Seguin provided offense for the Bruins in the second period with a diving lunge at the puck as it trickled behind rookie sensation Braden Holtby, who otherwise made 31 saves on the night.

The third period had fans in and out of their seats as things began to heat up, but neither team could find the advantage over the other. The Bruins failed to convert on their power play numerous times including a chance with just over two minutes to go in regulation.

And, as people will tell you, hockey is a game of inches and bounces and chances, and each team has them. The Bruins had the best opportunity just as the overtime period started, and Patrice Bergeron missed an open net off a rebound by just a few inches. That turned into a chance the other way where perhaps the most unlikely candidate to score in overtime, Joel Ward, put the game winner in and sent the B's packing.

"It's definitely a weird feeling, an empty feeling," Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg said after the game. "You're kind of wondering what's going to happen--you don't even realize it's summer now, but again, a couple bounces here or there and it could have gone the other way."

Blame the refs. Blame Benoit Pouliot. Heck, even blame Tim Thomas for Saturday afternoon's loss to the Washington Capitals. But when it comes down to it, blame Braden Holtby.

Holtby now has better numbers than Thomas this post season -- he who was once called a third-stringer, playing for a team that barely made the playoffs. You can blame him.

But once you are done blaming and cursing the hockey gods for allowing him the breaks his team has had and the curses the Bruins have faced, take solace in knowing this.

They made him bleed.

Not physically, no, but they revealed a soft spot in the wall that can give Bruins fans everywhere a sense of hope and will alleviate some of the urges to wallow in misery.

In the second period, being down 2-0 after Alexander Semin and Jay Beagle ripped into Tim Thomas, the Bruins could have easily just wallowed in their own misery. They had seen this before, and the momentum had been ripped from their grasp.

But never discount the value of certain members of the team, most notably, Shawn Thornton.

That fourth line provided just the right amount of spark by doing, well, what they are supposed to be doing.

"You want to finish your checks and get pucks in deep and there was an opportunity to finish the check and that’s what we tried to do and created a little energy," Thornton said after the game. "And the guys did a good job of following it up and scoring two goals to tie it in the second."

With under three minutes to go in the second period, the Bruins did score two goals--two goals in 28 seconds. This happened a lot during the month of November and through the first half of the season. Bruins fans were almost accustomed to seeing that every game. But seeing it come against the otherwise blemish-free wall that Holtby has been is more encouraging than the loss is discouraging.

"We had a pretty strong finish against them that period," Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said. "We put a lot of pressure on him. We threw every puck on net. We had some traffic and we put those pucks behind. We have to continue to do that and it is always big in the playoffs to have that traffic and a lot of pucks in the net."

They know this song and dance. They have done it so many times. And now that they don't it's possible and they have the confidence, they just have to go do it.

In fact, that was their mantra last night in the locker room--just do it. When asked if their experience last year being in these kinds of predicaments would help them going forward in this series, they said yes, but that knowing they can do it, and just doing it are two different things.

"Knowing that we’ve been in these types of situations and responded well in the past can help to build confidence as a group, that we have what it takes to come back and do what we’re going to need to do to win this series if we want to move on," Thomas said. "But having said that, it’s up to us to do it, not just to know that we’ve done it before. So don’t think it’s just going to happen. We’re going to have to reach down deep inside of ourselves and find a way."

The Bruins face elimination today at 3 p.m. in Washington, as they take on the Capitals at Verizon Center for Game 6 in Washington, D.C.

The Bruins had the momentum on their side for much of the second part of the game, but ended up taking a 4-3 loss to the Washington Capitals in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden.

It was geared up to be an exciting end to the game. Both teams fought back at various points during the game, and, with three minutes left to go in the third period, the game was tied 3-3.

But then with a quick flick of the wrist and a hand in the air, the Bruins took a penalty and Benoit Pouliot sat in the penalty box looking from the outside in at the result of his slashing penalty.

As he sat there, 1:20 later, the Capitals were able to convert with the extra-man, courtesy of Troy Brouwer, sending all the momentum the Bruins had out the window on a call that has been deemed "very weak" by Bruins head coach Claude Julien.

With the penalty call and the goal coming late, the Bruins didn't have much time to come back after, but they had more chances before that as they proved in the second period.

After the first period was held scoreless, the B's were able to come back in the second and dominate the period like they have done in the past. Though they let up two goals early on, they came back with less than three minutes to go in the middle frame to score two goals of their own within 28 seconds of each other, courtesy of Dennis Seidenberg and Brad Marchand.

That ended the second period and the Bruins left the ice on a high note. However, the Capitals were the ones that struck first in the third period, as Mike Knuble put in his first goal of the playoffs past Thomas to give them the 3-2 lead. That goal came just seconds after Bruins defenseman Joe Corvo hit the ice after taking a shot to his right leg and not getting a stop in play. He hobbled around on his skates in obvious pain, and with essentially one man down, Knuble was able to capitalize.

"Yeah, I’ll take full responsibility for that third goal [from Washington]," Bruins forward Shawn Thornton said. "The rebound came up pretty hot and I tried to get my stick on top of [Mike Knuble’s] but he got just enough – we’re both right-handed, both swinging for it he got it so it’s my bad."

However, Johnny Boychuk answered and came into the scene and rocketed one past Holtby on the power play to tie it with more than half the period to go. The momentum from that goal seemed to carry into the final minutes of the game until the slashing penalty took it's toll.

"The last goal he fooled me and beat me clean," Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas said. "He’s coming down with a lot of speed and he shot and I read that the shot was going lower. And by the time I even realized that the shot was going that high, I didn’t even have time to raise my hand."

While many of the players visually looked displeased by the call, none of them could comment on whether they thought it was the right call, and instead just retorted with "we have to come out and play tomorrow."

Tomorrow's game is less than 24 hours away and will be played at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. at 3 p.m.

The series is all tied up 2-2, and the Bruins will bring the Capitals back to Boston for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs at 3:00 p.m. EST on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden in Boston, MA. Below is a live blog with score updates and analysis for Monday night's game.

THIRD PERIOD

20:00: Capitals take Game 5, 4-3. Game 6 tomorrow in Washington.

18:33: Benoit Pouliot's penalty proved to be a big one, after Brouwer walked right in and sniped one past Thomas to put the Capitals up with just over a minute to go in the third.

15:16: Bruins continue to put pressure on Holtby. Patrice Bergeron sat out a couple of shifts after taking a big hit from Alex Ovechkin, but did manage to take on short shift since then.

8:47: Well, until now. Johnny Boychuk decided he wanted to fix the power play and put in his first goal of the playoffs with a one-timer from the blueline. He's accustomed to doing that, but normally it's from the right side. He took it from the left this time

7:29: Former Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman heads to the sin bin after cross-checking Marchand in the face. Bruins are back on the power play, but have not converted once in this series.

5:28: Holtby coming up big for the Caps once again, make two big stops on Lucic and Tyler Seguin. It was perhaps his best save of the series, doing a split to stop the Bruins young sniper. Still 3-2.

3:21: After the huge surge in the last part of the second period, the Caps are the ones to come out and convert. Tim Thomas gave up a big rebound, and Mike Knuble was there to put it in. Capital's up 3-2.

SECOND PERIOD

20:00: Sorry I didn't get to update until now. The internet was broken due to two Boston goals in 28 seconds. Dennis Seidenberg and Brad Marchand each found a way past the previously unblemished Holtby with under three minutes to play in the period. They tied the game at two going into intermission and are currently outshooting them 24-23.

14:27: Jay Beagle adds to the Capitals lead, putting a soft one past Thomas to give Washington a 2-0 lead. That was Beagle's first goal of the playoffs.

14:03: Bruins are still being outshot 21-15, though they have put a bit of pressure on Holtby.

11:16: Capitals forward Alexander Semin found a rebound and put it in back of the net on their 19th shot of the game. Just seconds before the goal, Bruins defenseman Joe Corvo took a shot to his right ankle and could not skate on it. Play was not stopped and Semin took the opportunity to put his team up.

9:17: Thomas shows his skill off and makes two huge saves almost back-to-back. His save on Joel Ward had him throw all his pads to work and he covered it up to force a faceoff. Score still 0-0

7:24: Johnny Boychuk and Troy Brouwer got things heated up in the second as both of them were called for matching roughing penalties 5:14 into the second period. The Bruins also have had a couple of very good scoring chances, Chara with one from the blueline that nearly made it's way past Holtby. Caps still outshooting the B's 14-13.

FIRST PERIOD

20:00: Tim Thomas ended the last minutes of the period with a gigantic save on superstar Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin came through the slot and tried deeking past Thomas who stuck his right leg pad out to make the save. And, as it's been so far this series, neither team was able to put the puck in the back of the net. Just before the horn, Chara collided with a Jason Chimera and was knocked in the back of the head. He remained down on the ice for a couple of seconds, before standing up and looking a bit dazed.

15:42: Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik heads to the box now. Washington is outshooting the Bruins 10-6 at this point.

13:56: Things have started to get very chippy here now. Daniel Paille and Troy Brouwer got into a little tiff before a faceoff and were sent off for matching unsportsmanlike conduct minors, and not so far after that, Zdeno Chara went for roughing. The B's were able to successfully kill the penalty, down 4-on-3, and they have the crowd on its feet.

10:20: There's been a little more life at least, and the Bruins have tied the Caps in shots at 5-5. Holtby continues to look strong in net, as has Thomas.

7:37: The B's have only registered one official shot on net, though there were a couple that hit the post already. Captain Zdeno Chara knocked the piping after firing a one-timer from the right faceoff circle on the power play. The Caps have dominated the neutral zone play thus far, and have tested Thomas early, putting up four shots.

2:30: John Carlson fired a shot on net and promptly continued to skate through the slot and barreled into Tim Thomas. Bruins are on their first power play of the night.

PREGAME: Tim Thomas and Braden Holtby currently look eerily similar through four games. Holtby owns a 1.60 GAA with two wins, and Vezina Winner Thomas also has two wins and a 1.60 GAA, both giving up seven goals so far this series. Needless to say, Holtby has made a name for himself, and what better situation than the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
