On Monday, the Dallas Mavericks released former Celtics point guard Delonte West. West had been suspended twice during the preseason.

Former Boston Celtics point guard Delonte West appears to be out of a job, after getting released by the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. The move was made by Dallas in part to trim its roster down to 15 players for the start of the 2012-13 season.

In West's case, though, it appears he may have been released as much because of problems off the court as opposed to poor play on it. West, who suffers from bi-polar disorder, was suspended twice during the preseason following a pair of locker room incidents. The first suspension lasted less than a day, but West was suspended again last Thursday and never reinstated by the team.

And according to ESPN Dallas, there was a fear of West's antics spilling into the regular season and affecting a young Mavericks team. With Jason Kidd and Jason Terry gone from Dallas, the Mavericks will rely on a much younger back court, which will now feature Darren Collison and O.J. Mayo. By releasing West, the Mavericks hoped to ensure that the eight-year veteran didn't have a negative impact on the team's younger players.

West played in Boston for the first three seasons of his career, averaging a career-high 12.2 points per game in 2007.

With the NFL's New York City offices closed through Tuesday, the league has elected to postpone the trade deadline until Thursday. This is the second time the deadline has been postponed.

The effects of Hurricane Sandy have been far-reaching around the New York City, and one unlikely place they've hit is the NFL, and the league's trade deadline.

That's right, with NFL offices closed through Tuesday because of the storm, the NFL has taken the unusual step of postponing its trade deadline two days and moving it to 4 p.m. ET Thursday. All 32 league teams were notified of the decision on late Monday.

The ironic thing is that this isn't the first time the deadline has been postponed within the last few months. In hopes of sparking interest in more trades, the NFL had already pushed back the deadline from its original date following Week 6, to after Week 8, which this year fell on Oct. 30.

The NFL's league offices are located on Park Avenue in New York City but will remain closed through the end of the day Tuesday because of Hurricane Sandy.

Bruins Tyler Seguin and Patrice Bergeron have come to find that life in the Swiss National League isn't easy. Each, who is playing in Switzerland during the lockout has struggled so far.

After cancelling all November games last week, it appears as though the NHL will announce on Thursday it is cancelling this year's Winter Classic as well. The game was slated for Jan. 1, 2013, to be played between the Maples Leafs and Red Wings.

The NHL lockout appears to have claimed another victim, as ESPN New York is reporting that on Thursday the league will cancel its annual Winter Classic game.

The game has become a staple of the hockey regular season, pitting two teams in an outdoor venue annually on Jan. 1. This year's game was slated to be played at Michigan Stadium between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.

However, with the league mired in a lockout, it appears as though the 2013 game will be cancelled. According to the ESPN New York report, a big factor in Thursday's decision could come from TV, since HBO needs to know by mid-November whether the game will be played, to prepare their 24/7 documentary crew for the event.

Sadly, the Winter Classic is just the latest casualty of the lockout.

Last week the league announced that all games through the end of November had been cancelled, and as things stand there are no scheduled talks between the league and the player's association going forward.

Seven ACC teams are slated for bowl games this postseason in SB Nation's most recent college football projections. Florida State leads the charge, and appears headed to the Orange Bowl as the conference champion.

After 10 weeks of the college football season, seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams appear in the most recent bowl projections released by SB Nation's Jason Kirk.

Not surprisingly, Kirk has Florida State projected to the Orange Bowl, where they will represent the ACC as the conference champion. At 8-1 and 5-1 league play, the Seminoles only need to win their remaining two conference games at Virginia Tech and Maryland to win the Atlantic Division outright. They would then be heavily favored in the ACC Championship Game. Should Florida State advance to the Orange Bowl, Kirk has the Seminoles projected for a very interesting matchup with Boise State.

Of the rest of Kirk's projections, the most interesting appears to be a potential high-scoring affair between Clemson and Texas A&M in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. The two teams are each ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense. At 6-3, we also know Duke will be making their first bowl appearance since 1995, and as things stand, Kirk has them playing in this year's Independence Bowl.

Rounding out the rest of the ACC's teams in this week's college football bowl projections are Miami to the Sun Bowl, N.C. State to the Russell Athletic Bowl, Virginia Tech to the Belk Bowl and Maryland to the Music City Bowl.

At 2-6, local school Boston College would need to win out to become bowl eligible.

After impressive back-to-back wins over the weekend against UMass-Lowell, Boston College remains No. 1 in the USCHO college hockey Top 25. The Eagles are one of four Boston teams ranked in the Top 15.

With this weekend's NCAA hockey scores now in, Boston College headlines four Boston-area teams ranked in this week's USCHO Top 25.

At 4-1, the Eagles are the nation's top team, courtesy of back-to-back wins this weekend over UMass-Lowell. The Eagles notched a 1-0 victory on Friday night, before adding a 6-3 victory on Sunday. Kevin Hayes led Boston College with two goals in the second victory.

In addition to the Eagles, the college hockey scene remains strong around the rest of Boston as well, with Boston University coming in at No. 12 in Monday's poll, Harvard following up at No. 13 and Northeastern at No. 15.

It was a successful weekend for the Boston University Terriers, who took two games from UMass-Amherst by scores of 5-2 and 3-2. Like cross-town rival Boston College, Boston University is now 4-1 on the year.

Meanwhile, Harvard beat Bentley by a final score of 5-2 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Northeastern finished at No. 15 this week, after going 0-1-1 in two games this weekend with New Hampshire.
