2012 U.S. Open Scores: Andy Roddick Retires After Loss

Andy Roddick's career has ended following his loss to Juan Martin Del Potro on Wednesday 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4 at the U.S. Open. Roddick had previously said that he would retire at the end of the tournament.

Roddick won the first set after play resumed following Tuesday's delay, but he couldn't keep pace with Del Potro on Wednesday. In the second set neither player had a break point, but Del Potro took a tight tiebreaker. The seventh-ranked Del Potro took over in the third and Roddick showed his age losing 6-2 in just 28 minutes. Roddick was able to put up a fight in the fourth, but it was too little too late and Del Potro closed the match out. Del Potro will advance to face Novak Djokovic who dispatched Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets. No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic topped Philipp Kohlschreiber in the other fourth round match of the day, he will face David Ferrer.

Roddick retires after a career in which he won the 2003 U.S. Open and reached four other Grand Slam finals.

On the women's side, No. 3 Maria Sharapova rallied to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over No. 11 Marion Bartoli after trailing 0-4 following Tuesday's delay. She will advance to face top-seed Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals. No. 10 Sara Errani defeated No. 20 Roberta Vinci in another quarterfinal.
