A busy Sunday at Flushing Meadows had a number of the top seeds in action, with most of them prevailing. No. 5 Petra Kvitova was the highest seed to fall on Sunday when she lost her fourth round match to No. 11 Marion Bartoli 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
All three of the other Singles matches on the women's side of the draw went in favor of the higher seed with No. 1 Victoria Azarenka (def. Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2), No. 3 Maria Sharapova (def. No. 19 Nadia Petrova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4) and No. 7 Samantha Stosur (def. Laura Robson 6-4, 6-4) also advancing to the quarterfinals which begin on Tuesday.
For the men, Sunday was the conclusion of the third round and a few high seeds punched their tickets through to the Round of 16.
No. 2 Novak Djokovic defeated No. 31 Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. No. 4 David Ferrer was tested by Lleyton Hewitt but eventually won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Argentinian seven seed Juan Martin del Potro defeated his countryman Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6. No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic was victorious over Grega Zemlja 6-4, 6-3, 7-5. No. 13 Richard Gasquet took care of Steve Johnson, winning 7-4, 6-2, 6-3. No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka pulled off the upset of No. 14 Alexandr Dolgopolov, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
One of the most notable matches of the day was 20th-seeded American Andy Roddick continuing his tournament and career by beating Fabio Fognini 7-5, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
The last match of the day, still in progress as the clock turns over to Tuesday morning is between No. 9 John Isner, the highest seeded American, and No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber. Isner dropped the first set 4-6 but currently leads the second set three games to two.
