In the 2012 U.S. Open on Saturday, the stars took center stage with Roger Federer and Serena Williams moving on to the fourth round in their respective draws.
Federer made it look easy against No. 25 Fernando Verdasco in straight sets. The Switzerland product was dominant from start to finish, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
Great Britain's third-ranked Andy Murray had a much tougher afternoon in a long battle with No. 30 Feliciano Lopez. The Olympic gold medalist was able to ultimately dispatch Lopez in four sets including three tiebreaks, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 4-6 and 7-6 (7-4).
On the women's side, Williams blew past Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-0 in just over an hour. Williams was the pre-tournament favorite of many and has shown why in the first week of play.
In a large upset, Andrea Hlavackova defeated 14th-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko in three sets. Hlavackova lost the initial set 7-5, but rallied to come out on top, topping Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4 in the end.
