Danny Valencia Traded: Red Sox Acquire 3rd Baseman From Twins

The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins decided to not only play on the field Sunday but also wheel-and-deal off it. During the finale of a three-game series, the two teams conducted a trade which will send third baseman Danny Valencia to Boston in exchange for minor-league outfielder Jeremias Pineda.

Valencia, who will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, is 27 years old and has played sparingly over his three seasons with the Twins. He is a career .260 hitter. In 2010, Valencia finished third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting. On Friday, Valencia went 0-for-4 against the Red Sox.

Meanwhile, Pineda is a 21-year-old prospect who was playing for the Red Sox's Rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

The move puts the Red Sox's 40-man roster at 40.
