Led by Connecticut Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma and a handful of his former players, the Team USA women's basketball team steamrolled China, 114-66, on Sunday. The final point total tied an Olympic-team record for USA, which matched the same total from a 1992 contest against Spain. The victory helped USA end preliminary-round play with an unblemished 5-0 record.
Former UConn star Diana Taurasi scored a game-high 22 points for Team USA, which led 61-36 at halftime. Team USA outscored China 30-8 in the second quarter.
Captain Sue Bird, another former Huskie, finished with six points and three assists, while Mia Moore added 12 points and seven rebounds. Swin Cash ended the game with six points, Tina Charles had 12, while Asjha Jones added six.
Overall, seven players reached double-figures in scoring for Team USA, which awaits its draw in the quarterfinals.
