Former world No. 1 and the 2012 U.S. Open's eighth seed, Caroline Wozniacki wont even make it out of the first round of the season's final major tournament, as Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu upset the Dane in the first round Tuesday night, 6-2, 6-2.
Wozniacki was expected to contend for the title at Flushing Meadow, where she was a finalist in 2009. Wozniacki's quarter of the draw included Serena Williams, and many were looking forward to the potential quarterfinal matchup between the two big hitters.
Begu is playing in just her second U.S. Open after a quick exit in the 2011 edition of the tournament. In her major championship career thus far, Begu has not made it past the second round in six previous appearances. She has made the second round at Roland Garros twice.
The unranked Begu will face Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the second round after the Spaniard defeated Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-3, 6-2.
