Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will be placed on the disabled list due to continued issues with his right Achilles, according to Tom Caron of NESN.com.
The 36-year-old slugger will receive an injection in addition to undergoing a week of treatment on his Achilles in the hopes of potentially returning prior to the conclusion of the 2012 season. Ryan Kalish, a 24-year-old, left-handed hitting outfielder, has been recalled to fill the open roster spot.
Ortiz returned to action on Friday night after missing 35 games because of the injury. He went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in his return. However, he continued to feel discomfort and was removed from the lineup for the remainder of the series.
