Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett has been claimed off of trade waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a report.
As our Red Sox blog Over The Monster points out, this was a shocking development. Beckett is owed $31.5 million over the 2013 and 2014 seasons. In addition, Beckett is just 5-11 this season with a 5.23 ERA. He has not won a decision since July 15 and has dropped four of his last six starts.
The Red Sox also placed first baseman Adrian Gonzalez on trade waivers this week. The Dodgers have also reportedly claimed Gonzalez off of waivers. Like Beckett, Gonzalez is owed a big salary over the rest of his contract. The Red Sox will have 48 hours to revoke the waiver, make a trade with the Dodgers or let the Dodgers claim the players and their salaries. Unlike Gonzalez, Beckett could reject the Dodgers' claim.
