The Red Sox will look to even their series against the Yankees at one-a-piece as they send Jon Lester to the mound against David Phelps. First pitch is at 4:05 p.m. EST with broadcasts on FOX and WEEI.
The Sox will have Ryan Lavarnway behind the plate despite the presence of a right-handed pitcher on the mound. While the typical strategy for Boston has been to platoon Saltalamacchia with a right-handed bat like Lavarnway and, before him, Shoppach, they might be into the territory where they're looking more towards player development than results in the standings.
Either agenda, of course, could explain the presence of Pedro Ciriaco in the lineup. The young infielder will bat eighth and play shortstop in place of MIke Aviles, who takes a seat on the bench for the night.
