Red Sox 9, Yankees 4, End 7th -- And suddenly the Sox are having fun out there. After Adrian Gonzalez chased Boone Logan with a double to deep center field, the Sox started hammering Cory Wade. Cody Ross was kept off the basepaths when Jayson Nix either snagged a line drive for the first out or threw to first after an errant call by the first base umpire on a drop depending on how you look at it, but after him the balls found dirt. Ryan Sweeney absolutely crushed a triple into the triangle to score one, and Mauro Gomez hit a double past third to score Sweeney. While Pedro Ciriaco was denied a hit by a stingy scorer, his hard hit to third bounced off of Jayson Nix' glove, scoring a pinch-running Mike Aviles from second, and he would not be denied a run of his own, dashing to third with a stolen base and then hurrying home when the throw to third got away. All together, four runs in in the seventh, giving the Sox a five-run lead.
Red Sox 5, Yankees 4, Mid 7th -- Felix Doubront's night comes to an end with a bang, as Andruw Jones goes over everything and then some with his third homer of the game. Matt Albers is able to work around a one-out walk, however, with Derek Jeter providing a generous two-out bunt to end the inning without too much trouble
Red Sox 5, Yankees 3, End 6th -- A lead! A lead! Adrian Gonzalez starts the rally with a single to right, but it's the call-ups who seal the deal for the Red Sox. Derek Jeter lends a helping hand by botching a ground ball hit in his direction by Cody Ross, and while Ryan Sweeney can only pop out, Mauro Gomez finds the outfield to load the bases with one out.
Up comes Pedro Ciriaco, the clutch king of spring training, and in his first real opportunity with the Sox he carries the title over to the majors. He hits the first pitch he sees hard down the third base line and into left field, and with the ball getting back to the wall, all three baserunners score, giving the Sox their first lead of the game.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 2, Mid 6th -- This time the Yankees pick up some serious contact off of Felix Doubront, but it still doesn't lead to a baserunner. With 95 pitches on his arm, he's not likely long for this game, but it's been an impressive recovery.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 2, End 5th -- And suddenly it's a one-run game, and they've got none other than Darnell McDonald to thank for it. After a Pedro Ciriaco single gave the Sox a one-out baserunner, it was McDonald closing on the same fly ball as Curtis Granderson that caused the latter to flub the play, having the ball bounce off his glove and letting Ciriaco reach third, where he would score from on a Nick Punto sacrifice fly.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, Mid 5th -- Two more strikeouts highlight another 1-2-3 frame for Felix Doubront, who is suddenly looking like his old self again.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, End 4th -- A two-out double from Adrian Gonzalez extends his hitting streak to 18 games, but doesn't lead to any runs, as the Sox can only produce a pair of ground outs behind him.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, Mid 4th -- An excellent play from Pedro Ciriaco helps Doubront keep the Yankees off the board after a leadoff walk, getting the lead runner out and just barely missing a double play. Another ground ball in his direction still doesn't get two, but with Russell Martin striking out to end the inning, it hardly matters.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, End 3rd -- The Sox get a pair of leadoff baserunners as Mauro Gomez hits a double to the wall and moves to third on a bunt base hit from Pedro Ciriaco. Unfortunately, the good fortune of the bunt is erased as Daniel Nava's hard ground ball reaches Robinson Cano on one hop, allowing the Yankees to turn two as the run comes in the back door.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 0, Mid 3rd -- Another good inning for Felix Doubront, who gets a ground out and two strikeouts. He could easily have just one run on the board now, but that's the way things are rolling for the Red Sox right now.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 0, End 2nd -- The Sox almost had a bit of life in the second when Ryan Sweeney hit a hard shot to left with Cody Ross on base via a walk. Unfortunately, Andruw Jones is up to the challenge defensively, covering a good bit of ground and making a diving grab to rob the Sox of extra bases and perhaps a run.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 0, Mid 2nd -- Felix Doubront works around a single from Mark Teixeira turned into a double by Daniel Nava in left. Two strikeouts at the end of the inning are a positive sign for the struggling Doubront.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 0, End 1st -- A leadoff hit from Daniel Nava holds the promise of more first inning offense, but it goes unfulfilled as Nick Punto (batting second!) grounds into a double play behind him. Ortiz hits into the shift for the third, bringing the inning to an end with the Sox still down three.
Yankees 3, Red Sox 0, Mid 1st -- Is this a positive or a negative? Sure, the Sox gave up three first inning runs, but that's an improvement over the first two games of the series, which saw five and four runs score in the first. This time it's Mauro Gomez that shoulders the majority of the blame, as the third baseman commits two errors on one play with a bobble and errant throw of a ground ball, and then fails to field a bunt in time to record the out. That leaves two men on for Mark Teixeira who gets a ball waist-high over the plate. He doesn't miss it, launching a high drive to dead center which ends up in the bleacher seats for a three-run shot. Just another day at the ballpark for these Red Sox.
