Elizabeth Beisel earned her first medal of the 2012 Olympic Games as she grabbed the silver medal in the 400 meter individual medley final Saturday at the Olympic Park Aquatics Centre.
The Saunderstown, RI native finished with a time of 4:31.27, more than three seconds behind the eventual gold medal winner Shiwen Ye of China. The 16-year old Ye set a new world record 4:28.43 in Saturday's final, thrashing the previous mark of 4:29.45, set by Australia's Stephanie Price in Beijing in 2008.
This is the third medal for Beisel in her Olympic career after earning two silvers at the 2008 Beijing games. This was the third medal for the United States swimming team in the London Games, and the fourth medal overall for the U.S.
China's Xuanxu Li took the bronze medal with a time of 4:32.91.
