With the Opening Ceremonies ready to commence on Friday to kick off the 2012 London Summer Olympics, it's time to take a look at some of our USA teams.
The U.S. Cycling Team is intriguing, with 17 first-time Olympians and only seven who are returning from prior games. For those unfamiliar, the cycling team is broken up into four disciplines for the both the men and women:
- BMX
- Track Cycling
- Road Cycling
- Mountain Biking
A few of the athletes have a local aspect to them in regards to Boston. Road cycling star Shelley Olds is a native of Groton, MA while Evelyn Stevens hails from Acton, MA.
Mountain Biker Mary McConneloug isn't from Massachusetts, but currently resides in Chilmark, MA.
The road cycling course is perhaps the best known of the four categories, and is 250km for the men and 140km for the women, with nine Americans competing in the event (five men, four women).
