Top-seeded Maria Sharapova was upset in the fourth round at Wimbledon in straight sets by Sabine Lisicki on Monday, 6-4, 6-3.
With Victoria Azarenka winning on Monday, Sharapova is guaranteed to lose her world No. 1 ranking.
Lisicki, seeded No. 15, has made several strong runs at Wimbledon, where her big serve is magnified. She had six aces and 18 winners on Monday to keep Sharapova from becoming the first woman in a decade to win the French Open and Wimbledon in succession.
In other tournament news from Monday, Serena Williams defeated Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in three sets and Roger Federer advanced in four sets against Xavier Malisse of Belgium.
