Red Sox Vs. White Sox Final Score: Cody Ross' Walkoff Shot Gives Boston 3-1 Win

Clay Buchholz and Jose Quintana were the stars of an unexpected pitchers' duel. Clay Buchholz pushed the first three innings on just two hits, with his changeup his best pitch in an arsenal that was all on for the most part, while Quintana retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a triple to Pedro Ciriaco with two outs in the third. The White Sox got the final out off of Ellsbury, ending the threat.

Things would finally go wrong for Clay Buchholz in the fourth. Surrendering a leadoff walk to Adam Dunn and a single to Paul Konerko behind him, Buchholz was able to limit the damage to just the one run, but it would prove an important run, as Quintana would put up strong inning after strong inning, leaving the Red Sox trailing late into the game.

The Sox would finally get a real shot in the seventh inning, as Quintana struggled to work his way through the middle of Boston's lineup. Singles from Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez, and Cody Ross would load the bases with one out. Will Middlebrooks came to the plate and fought a lengthy battle against Quintana, and on the eighth pitch hit the ball sharply to short. Alexei Ramirez reacted quickly, diving to his left to make the grab and firing to second to start an inning-ending double play.

All the frustration, however, would finally come to an end in the ninth. Still facing the one-run deficit after the only inning of relief Clay Buchholz would need--an Alfredo Aceves ninth--the top of the lineup got rolling. Carl Crawford led off with a slapped single into right. A Dustin Pedroia ground ball would only result in one out at second, and Adrian Gonzalez shot a grounder through the right side behind it to put a runner in scoring position.

Up came Cody Ross, author of two three-run shots in the previous game. He took one pitch for a ball, one for a strike, and on his third got the one he was looking for: a fastball that started inside and was cutting over the plate. Ross took his Fenway-perfect swing, and the ball found itself right where his second shot of the night before left the park. His third three-run shot in two days, and this time a walkoff.
