David Ortiz Injury: Red Sox Slugger To Be Placed On DL

Despite saying he feels alright which was backed-up by a negative MRI on his Achilles tendon, Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will be placed on the disable list, manager Bobby Valentine told Boston's WEEI on Wednesday. Minor-leaguer Mauro Gomez has been called up to replace Ortiz on the roster.

On Monday, Ortiz was hurt while rounding second base on a home run by teammate Adrain Gonzalez. Ortiz hobbled to home plate, but after the game said he was fine. His claim was supported the following day when an MRI showed no tear or rupture, however, the 36-year-old was seen wearing a walking boot and admitted he may miss a week.

Ortiz's DL stint is retroactive from July 17.
