Venus Williams fell in the first round at Wimbledon for just the second time in her career on Monday, to 79th-ranked Elena Vesnina, 6-1, 6-3.

Williams was a Wimbledon rookie in 1997 when she lost her first-ever match in the tournament. She has since won the tournament five times, but could not get past Vesnina on Monday during Day 1 at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.

For the match, which lasted little more than an hour, Williams was broken five times but broke Vesnina just once.

Williams has now failed to advance past the second round in any of her last three Grand Slam tournament appearances. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder last summer and fielded questions Monday about whether she would think about retirement after this year's Olympics, but said she isn't ready to hang up her tennis shoes yet.
