The undefeated Massachusetts Minutemen begin their 2012 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament run Saturday afternoon against the Colgate Raiders at Garber Field. (Game Time: 2:30 p.m., TV Schedule: ESPN U, ESPN 3)
UMass finished the regular season as the nation's No. 1-ranked team and won the CAA championship, but only earned the No. 6 seed when tournament rankings were released. Colgate, the Patriot League champion, is unranked.
The game features two of the nation's highest-scoring offenses. UMass ranks third in goals per game this season and Colgate is second. The Minutemen also possess the second-ranked defense, while the Raiders are 32nd.
The meeting will be UMass' first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2009. Three years prior to that, the Minutemen made the longest postseason run in program history, reaching the NCAA finals before falling to Virginia.
UMass attackman Will Manny and Colgate attackman Peter Baum are both finalists for the Tewaaraton Award.
