The Red Sox have set their 25-man roster for opening day, and will break camp with 13 pitchers in light of the Andrew Bailey injury.
Pitchers:
Alfredo Aceves
Matt Albers
Scott Atchison
Daniel Bard
Josh Beckett
Michael Bowden
Clay Buchholz
Felix Doubront
Jon Lester
Mark Melancon
Franklin Morales
Vicente Padilla
Justin Thomas
Catchers:
Jarrod Saltalamacchia
Kelly Shoppach
Infielders:
Mike Aviles
Adrian Gonzalez
David Ortiz
Dustin Pedroia
Nick Punto
Kevin Youkilis
Outfielders:
Jacoby Ellsbury
Darnell McDonald
Cody Ross
Ryan Sweeney
Rather than a position player like Pedro Ciriaco or Jason Repko getting the last spot on the roster, Justin Thomas and Scott Atchison will combine to fill both that spot and the space left open by Andrew Bailey despite the poor performance of the former during the spring.
While the roster is set for now, there are likely shakeups coming in the near future. Carl Crawford is do back not too long from now, and with Rich Hill and Andrew Miller both getting ready to come off the disabled list, the back end relievers will have to prove their worth in a hurry.
