Boston's Fenway Park will once again host an international soccer match as English Premier League side Liverpool will meet up with Italian Serie A side Roma in an friendly on July 25. The match will be the 20th in the history of the nearly 100-year-old venue.
Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Red Sox, also owns Liverpool which was purchased in 2010. John Henry, Red Sox and Liverpool owner, said about the match:
"During its 100-year history, Fenway Park has hosted some of the best in athletic competition, and a match between Liverpool and Roma -- two of the world's most well-known and respected clubs -- is an appropriate way to ... showcase our ballpark to an international audience," Liverpool owner John Henry said. Liverpool defeated Roma in the 1984 European Cup Final in a penalty shootout, 4-2, which gave Liverpool their fourth European Cup victory.
Liverpool will make Boston a home base and practice at Harvard during their American preseason tour. The EPL team last traveled to the U.S. in 2004.
