The local college landscape got a shocking upset Friday, as the UMass Minutemen upset No. 1-ranked Boston University, 3-2, in a Hockey East Conference game at Agganis Arena in Boston.The victory was the first road win for UMassall season and help them slide into the final playoff spot in the league standings.
UMass (10-12-5) used a first-period goal by Branden Gracel to take an early lead, but BU (17-9-1) answered fairly quickly to tie the game at 1 after the first 20 minutes.
In the second period, UMass took a 2-1 lead after Joel Hanley netted a power-play goal at 12:47. The game-winner was scored in the third period when Michael Pereira scored on a empty-neet goal with less than a minutes remaining.
BU tallied a goal to close within 3-2, but it was a little too late as UMass held on.
On Sunday, the Minutesmen were not able to build on the moment as they lost versus Providence College, 3-2.
