Hockey East roundup: UNH loses lead in third period, ties U.S. Under-18 Team in lone Sunday game

U.S. Under-18 Team 2, New Hampshire 2 (OT)
Sophomore Casey Thrush and junior Kevin Goumas each tallied a goal over the first two periods on Sunday afternoon at the Whittmore Center, but the visiting U.S. Under-18 Team completed a "three-point weekend" against Hockey East with two third-period goals in a 2-2 tie with the top-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats. Reading, Mass. native and junior Jeff Wyer made the start in the exhibition contest, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced, including 13 over the third period and overtime. With Wyer pitching a shutout through 40 minutes, the visitors scored two goals in less than 40 seconds in the middle stages of the final stanza off the sticks of CCHA commits Anthony Louis (Miami) and Tyler Motte (Michigan). After an impressive Saturday showing in a 3-1 win at Merrimack, uncommitted Californian Thatcher Demko made 35 saves as the Stars and Stripes extended their unbeaten streak to 12 straight games, with an overall record of 15-6-1-3. UNH enters the break in second in the league standings and returns to the ice at rival Dartmouth on Dec. 30 as part of the Ledyard National Bank Classic at Thompson Arena.
