Hockey East: Red Sox interested in hosting "Frozen Fenway" again next winter

According to a College Hockey News report published Sunday night, the Boston Red Sox are interested in hosting another "Frozen Fenway" event at the 100-year old ballpark in 2014. If plans were to be finalized, this would be the third such event that has been hosted on Yawkey Way since 2010.

"We are deep into the planning phase for the possibility of a return of Frozen Fenway in 2014," Red Sox Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer Sam Kennedy said in his interview with CHN. "We will need to secure proper city approvals and complete our negotiations with the many teams who are interested in competing before we will have any formal announcement."

Sources told CHN's Mike McMahon that the headline of Hockey East's main event would be a "Holy War" match between Boston College and Notre Dame, which joins the league as its 11th member in time for next season.

UMass-Lowell, Providence and Merrimack are the only three of the conference's teams that have not skated outdoors as part of the event, so two of those three schools seem to be a natural fit to make up the second half of the doubleheader.

Previous outdoor Hockey East games at Fenway were scheduled around the 2010 NHL Winter Classic (Northeastern/New Hampshire women and Boston College/Boston University men) and as part of a two-week ice extravaganza last winter (UMass/Vermont, New Hampshire/Maine, Boston College/Northeastern men).
