Northeastern vs. Merrimack score update: Huskies dominate, lead 2-0 on the road

The Northeastern Huskies fell behind by a solid margin early in the first period of Friday's Hockey East contest against Merrimack at Matthews Arena, but they made sure not to do the same a night later as the scene shifted to Lawler Arena in North Andover.

The visitors in red and black dominated the majority of the first period and took a 2-0 lead to the first intermission. In that span, the teams tied 10-10 in shots on goal.

For the first time on the weekend, the Huskies earned themselves a lead, taking control of the scoreboard at 12:05 of the opening stanza. Captain Vinny Saponari got credit with his first goal of the season, also surpassing the 20-goal plateau early in the senior year of his career.

At 18:32, NU doubled its lead when freshman Michael McMurtry tipped in a one-time shot from classmate Kevin Roy for his first goal as a Husky, which also completed his first-ever multiple-point contest.

Additionally, the period was played in a very clean fashion as just one penalty was assessed on each side - both coming in the final five minutes.
