Boston College vs. N.C. State: Eagles conclude season against Wolfpack

Two teams will conclude their seasons when the Boston College Eagles (2-9) and N.C. State Wolfpack (6-5, 3-4 ACC) meet Saturday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium, but more than another year will likely be coming to an end.

Regardless of the outcome, the tenure of Boston College fourth-year head coach Frank Spaziani should come to an end after four underwhelming seasons. Spaziani has coached at Boston College since 1997 and has served three different roles with the team -- running backs coach, defensive coordinator and head coach. Spaziani was hired to replace the fired Jeff Jagodzinski in 2009.

Spaziani has logged 50 games as the programs coach and enters Saturday's season finale with a 22-28 record. The Eagles are 2-9 overall (1-6 ACC) this season, placing them sixth (dead last) in the Atlantic Division of the ACC.

There haven't been many bright spots for the Eagles this season, but the connection of Chase Rettig and Alex Amidon has been one of them. Rettig has amassed a career-high 2,932 yards and 17 touchdowns while tossing 10 interceptions while Amidon has 1,175 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Unfortunately, that special connection was kept in check during Boston College's 30-23 overtime loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies last Saturday on Senior Day at Alumni Stadium. Rettig was limited to only 129 passing yards and Amidon was uncharacteristically quiet, catching just one pass for 18 yards.

N.C. State's success has been fueled by an effective quarterback in Mike Glennon, whose 3,403 passing yards and 27 touchdowns have made the Wolfpack bowl eligible. The Wolfpack, directed by former Boston College coach Tom O'Brien, won't have the pressure of a do-or-die game in terms of a bowl berth as so many other teams do at this point, but improving their standings in the vast bowl pool should be reason enough to finish strong.

The Eagles and Wolfpack have met nine times but only three times in North Carolina, with Boston College holding a 6-3 edge in the all-time series. However, the Eagles are 1-2 against the Wolfpack on the road. Since joining the ACC, Boston College has won five of the seven meetings, with the Eagles scoring 30 or more points in four of those five wins. Last season, the Eagles and Wolfpack squared off in a low-scoring affair that saw BC capture a 14-10 win.
