The Northeastern Huskies and St. Lawrence Saints played to a back-and-forth first period in their first meeting since 2002, finishing tied 1-1. SLU ended the stanza with a 11-5 edge in shots on goal.
Despite the Saints having control of the opening minutes of the period, including the game's first four shots on goal in quick succession, the Huskies drew first blood at 13:25. For his sixth goal of the season, sophomore Ludwig Karlsson took a pass from classmate Dan Cornell, dropped into the right circle and beat screened SLU senior Matt Weninger.
Senior captain Vinny Saponari was credited with the secondary assist on the tally, extending his point streak to seven games in a row.
The Saints would not go down without hitting the scoreboard as a pair of juniors connected at 19:07. Greg Carey - the nation's third-leading scorer, behind Bentley's Brett Gensler and teammate Kyle Flanagan - took a feed in front from Jeremy Wick, deked around the Huskies defense and beat NU senior Bryan Mountain into an open right side of the cage for his ninth goal of the season.
