The Hockey East season has just hit its second month on the calendar, but the No. 15 Northeastern Huskies and Merrimack Warriors returned to Boston's historic Matthews Arena for the second time. Both teams went back-and-forth throughout the stanza and after the first period, the Warriors took a 2-1 lead for the first instance of the season set.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead just 8:44 into the period as junior captain Jordan Heywood buried a one-time goal past Northeastern senior goaltender Bryan Mountain for his second goal of the young season. Heywood took the cross-ice pass from sophomore Connor Toomey for the one-time score.
Northeastern second-year forward Ludwig Karlsson was able to crack the scoresheet for the first time on the season as he beat Warrior junior Sam Marotta on one-timer through traffic, after taking a pass from rookie Colton Saucerman.
Merrimack was able to take a lead into the locker room as Heywood's point shot had eyes and found the back of the net with 38.5 seconds remaining.
The Warriors held a 12-9 shots advantage in the stanza.
