Patriots waive Sterling Moore, sign Mike Rivera and Derrick Martin

The New England Patriots waived cornerback Sterling Moore and signed defensive back Derrick Martin and linebacker Mike Rivera.

Stew Milne-US PRESSWIRE

The New England Patriots waived cornerback Sterling Moore on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, New England signed defensive back Derrick Martin and linebacker Mike Rivera.

Moore was forced into a heavy role in the Patriots 45-7 throttling of the St. Louis Rams when starting corner Kyle Arrington suffered a head injury. Moore played 58 snaps in Week 8, but had only played 22 snaps in the previous two weeks combined.

Derrick Martin plays both safety and cornerback and was a member of the last two Super Bowl winners, the 2011 Giants and 2010 Packers. Rivera was a member of the Miami Dolphins earlier this season before straining his groin. He was on the Patriots practice squad last season and was with them during training camp this year. Martin also spent training camp with the Patriots in 2012.

The Patriots also released tight end/defensive end Alex Silvestro from the practice squad.

New England is on bye this week.
