The Boston Red Sox hired Brian Butterfield as their new third base coach Tuesday, as the team continues to build its coaching staff under new manager John Farrell. Farrell and executive vice president/general manager Ben Cherington announced the hire.
Butterfield served as third base coach under Farrell with the Toronto Blue Jays for the past two seasons. He spent a total of 11 years in Toronto, holding the third base coach position in parts of seasons from 2002 to '07 and 2010 to '12. Butterfield was the Blue Jays' bench coach in 2008 and '09.
Butterfield joins the Red Sox with 34 years of professional baseball experience, including 16 years in the major leagues. He served as first base coach for the New York Yankees from 1994 to '95 and third base/infield coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998 to 2000. Butterfield managed for parts of six minor league seasons in the Yankees organization.
