Boston College vs. Maryland: Dismal Eagles hoping for some home cooking

Saying the 2012 season has been a bad one for the Boston College Eagles football team would be an understatement. With only one win against Maine, an FCS team, an inexplicable loss to the Army Black Knights and back-to-back blowouts at the hands of the Florida St. Seminoles and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the 1-6 (0-4 ACC) Eagles are in desperate need of some home cooking against the Maryland Terrapins this Saturday inside Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, MA.

So far, the Eagles struggles have mainly been due to a defense that at times make swiss cheese look structurally sound. Boston College's defense ranks 121st out of 124 teams in total defense, giving up a whopping 507.3 yards per game on average. In addition, the Eagles are 99th in the country in points allowed (33.3 per game).

On the flip side, the BC offense has been passable, if not above average. That's due in part to junior quarterback Chase Rettig, who has the Eagles ranked 34th in the nation in passing offense with 278.1 yards per game. Alex Amidon has helped out in that department, too, catching 48 passes for 806 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 115.1 receiving yards per contest.

Maryland, meanwhile, finds itself in a deep hole coming into Saturday's game against Boston College, as an torn ACL for quarterback Perry Hills will force the Terrapins to use their third string quarterback from their original depth chart, according to The Heights. Maryland is 4-3 overall with a 2-1 mark in the ACC. The Terps were defeated by the N.C. State Wolfpack, 20-18, this weekend and have won two of their last three games. Maryland ranks in the bottom half of the league in passing yards, rushing yards and points for but is ranked 31st in points allowed with 20.3 per game.

Saturday's game will kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET, and the Eagles will wear special uniforms for the game to support the Wounded Warrior Project.
