Alabama earned nearly unanimous status as the No. 1 team in the country in the first edition of the BCS rankings, while the ACC placed a pair of teams in the top 20.

Florida earned beneficial rankings from many of the computers in the poll to take the No. 2 spot in the rankings, while the AP, USA Today, and Harris polls all consider Oregon to be the No. 2 team in the country. The Ducks took the No. 3 spot ahead of Kansas State and Notre Dame, rounding out the top five. LSU was the highest ranked undefeated team after knocking off South Carolina Saturday.

The computers take issue with the ACC, as Florida State and Clemson earned rankings almost entirely due to their status in human polls. The Seminoles took a No. 14 spot although only Jeff Sagarin's numbers put them in the top 25 - at No. 23 - and Clemson is ranked at No. 19 although Jeff Billingsley's algorithm was the only one to include the Tigers, at No. 22.
