Brandon McManus' connected on a 29-yard field goal in overtime to send the Temple Owls past the Connecticut Huskies, 17-14, on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.
Connecticut (3-4, 0-2 Big East) jumped ahead 14-0 after one quarter, scoring on a 15-yard pass from Chandler Whitmer (22-for-39, 293 yards, two TD) to Michael Smith at 5:50 and a 42-yard pass from Whitmer to Ryan Griffin with five seconds left in the opening quarter.
Temple (3-2, 2-0 Big East) answered with three straight scores. Former Boston College running back Montel Harris scored on a 24-yard run with 3:09 left before halftime and a 14-yard pass from Chris Coyer (13-for-26, 132 yards, TD, INT) to Jalen Fitzpatrick with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game.
After UConn gained a first down and moved the ball to the Temple 11 yard line, Chad Christen missed a 28-yard field goal. The Owls would not waste their opportunity to score, however, as McManus split the uprights after Temple gained a first down on its first overtime possession.
UConn heads north to face the Big East rival Syracuse Orange on Friday night.
