A day after acquiring right-handed pitcher Clay Mortensen in a trade for shortstop Marco Scutaro, the Boston Red Sox could be looking for a replacement the middle infielder but it will not be All-Star Hanley Ramirez. According to FOXSports.com's Jon Morosi (via Twitter), multiple sources have said to him that the Red Sox will not make a play for Ramirez.
Last season, Ramirez had the worst of his career hitting just .242 with 10 home runs in just 92 games. Currently, Nick Punto and Mike Aviles are the to be the best options to replace Scutaro at shortstop.
The trade of Scutaro freed up a few million dollars in payroll for the Red Sox, who probably would benefit more by spending that money on a starting pitcher. It seems as if veteran Roy Oswalt is the next logical target for Boston.
