The Blue Jays came out of the gates quickly against John Lackey this afternoon, scoring twice in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Edwin Encarnacion and Kelly Johnson. After escaping the jam, Lackey has settled down and not allowed another run.
The Red Sox answered back in the second inning behind Ryan Lavarnway who reached on an error by Brett Lawrie and drove in a run. The Sox would even the score two batters later when Jason Varitek drove in Kevin Youkilis. Then in the third inning, Marco Scutaro drove in Jacoby Ellsbury to give the Sox their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Ellsbury’s triple in the third inning extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Through four innings John Lackey had thrown over 80 pitches, but had been able to keep the Jays off the scoreboard after a very shaky first inning. Ricky Romero has been been efficient, throwing just 63 pitches through three innings of work.
