Animal Kingdom Wins 137th Running Of Kentucky Derby

Animal Kingdom, a three-year-old colt, won the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday evening.

John Velazquez, Animal Kingdom's jockey, replaced Robby Albarado earlier in the week as Animal Kingdom's jockey after Albarado broke his nose earlier this week.

"It's words that you can't describe," Velazquez said. "But I do really feel really bad for Robby. I hope he's winning the Derby with me here. I know he got hurt so this is for both of us, buddy. I know you're not on it, but I know you're with me." (via ESPN)

Animal Kingdom entered the Derby as a 20-1 longshot to win, but wound up beating second-place finisher Nehro by 2 3/4 lengths. Dialed In entered the race as a 5-1 favorite, but wound up placing third.

Velazquez was originally supposed to ride Uncle Mo, the favorite, but Uncle Mo was scratched because of a stomach problem.
