Hockey returns to Fenway Park for the first time since the Winter Classic two years ago, but this time, it features more of a college flavor. Boston College, the top ranked team in the nation, will host Hockey East rival Northeastern in a second men's outdoor doubleheader at the home of the Boston Red Sox at 6 p.m. EDT on January 14, 2012 as part of the Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012 event.
"After the January 7th hockey doubleheader at Fenway Park sold out in less than a week, we wanted to offer hockey fans another opportunity to watch an outdoor game at the ballpark this winter," said Red Sox Executive Vice President/COO Sam Kennedy (per BCEagles.com). "The addition of these two games also gives Boston residents a rare chance to see two popular local teams compete at both the high school and collegiate level."
In addition to the Eagles and Huskies, there will be a high school match-up between BC High and Catholic Memorial High (pending MIAA approval) at 3:00 p.m. EDT the same day. Citizens of Boston will also be invited to two free skate days called the Mayor's Community Skate Days.
"Boston is the best sports town in America and with Frozen Fenway it only gets better," said Mayor Thomas M. Menino (via BCEagles.com). "What a thrill it is for local hockey fans and our high school athletes to be able to experience hockey in historic Fenway Park. It is a truly special event and a highlight of winter in Boston."
