The Boston College Eagles football team are starting the season as a threat in the eyes of a handful of college coaches.

The Eagles were ranked 40th in the USA Today Top 25 preseason coaches poll, released Friday morning. Head coach Frank Spaziani's squad received 10 votes by the 59 college head coaches that make up the voting group.

The ACC was well represented in the Top 25, with 6th ranked Virginia Tech leading the way, along with Miami (13), Georgia Tech (17), North Carolina (18) and Florida State (20). BC shares the 40th spot in the poll with the Big Ten's Michigan State.

Not ranked in the 2009 preseason poll, the Eagles finished 8-5 overall last season, with a 5-3 conference record, ending with a loss in the Emerald Bowl to USC, 24-13. The last time the Eagles were ranked in the USA Today Top 25 was during the 2008 season, where they were ranked 20th the week of their appearance in the ACC Championship game.
