Ramon Ramirez Traded To Giants In Return For AA Pitcher

The Red Sox traded relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez to the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, in return for RHP Daniel Turpen.

Boston had been rumored to be shopping Ramirez for a few days now, a move that it more likely additional by subtraction than anything else.

Ramirez was 0-3 with a 4.46 ERA in 42.1 IP this season, while Turpen, a AA pitcher, is 5-5 with a 4.09 ERA.
Over The Monster sums it up thusly: "This makes no sense whatsoever."

... this is about as close as the Sox could really get to clear selling given how hard it would be to get real value from an Adrian Beltre or Victor Martinez deal. Ramirez was the only one of the "Terrible Trio" of Okajima-Declarmen-Ramirez that actually carried any value, given his improvement as the year has gone on (3.18 ERA in June, 3.27 ERA in July).
