Joel Piñeiro Last-Minute Scratch, Reliever Scott Shield Starts For Angels

Just minutes before the beginning of Wednesday's game, the Angels' scheduled starter, Joel Piñeiro, was scratched, with no announcement as to why just yet. (UPDATE: Don Orsillo in the NESN booth just said that it was a left oblique strain for Piñeiro.)

Reliever Scott Shields immediately began warming up and will take the ball for Los Angeles instead, making his first start since 2003.

Shields has not pitched longer than 2 2/3 innings in 2010, so expect a bullpen day for the Angels. The Red Sox may have just caught a break.
