Fenway Football Challenge: Celtic FC Take On Sporting CP In Friendly Wednesday Night

Wednesday night, Fenway Park's typical home runs and baseball diamond will give way to goals and and a pitch as Celtic Football Club of the Scottish Premier League of Scotland plays Sporting Clube de Portugal from the Portuguese Liga in a soccer friendly.

It will be the first game of soccer to be played at Fenway since 1968.

Sporting CP were fourth in there league last season, while Celtic were second in the Scottish Premier League. Both clubs have huge fan followings around the world. The atmosphere tonight at Fenway Park could give Bostonians a small taste of European soccer.

Both clubs are using tonight's game in Boston as a warm-up before their respective league seasons begin. Celtic have already played two games in North America. They lost Friday night to Manchester United, 2-1, in Toronto. On Sunday, they beat the MLS' Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field, 1-0.

Both teams have players to watch. For Celtic, Georgios Samaras is an impressive striker from Greece. Joe Ledley, a midfielder from Wales, was just signed by Celtic. He had several teams hoping to sign him in Europe.

For Sporting CP, Matias Fernandez is an excellent attacking midfielder from Chile. Pedro Mendes is a Portuguese midfielder who last year played for Celtic's number one rival Rangers.

The best part of tuning in for this game tonight should be the atmosphere. It really should be fun to hear and see the fans of both teams. For one night Fenway Park should be the one place to be for all soccer fans.

The game will be televised locally on NESN, beginning at 8 P.M. EDT.
