2012 Olympics: Aly Raisman Leads Trio Of New England Medalists

With the London 2012 games now in the rearview mirror, the United States can safely claim its status as the world's top medal winner, America easily earned top billing in the medal count, whether you stack it by overall medals or total golds, with China a kind-of-close second.

New England wasn't overwhelmingly represented on the podium, but three female athletes made their presence felt at the 30th Olympiad. Most prominent on our TV sets was Aly Raisman, the 18-year-old from Needham, Mass., who captained Team USA to women's team gold in gymnastics, adding individual gold in the floor exercise and a bronze in the balance beam. Elizabeth Beisel from Saunderstown, R.I., didn't get any golds, but found her way to the medal stand twice with a silver in the 400m IM and bronze in the 200m back. And Eleanor Logan from Portland, Maine, was a member of the successful women's eights team that won gold in rowing.

New England's collegiate ranks also made their presence felt: Harvard, of course, had medalists in rowing, as Esther Lofgren and Caryn Davies were also represented on that eights boat while Henrik Rummel was a member of the men's fours team that won bronze. And the women's basketball team that dominated the competition on its way to gold was obviously stacked with UConn talent, starting with coach Geno Auriemma, but also featuring six of 12 players, two of whom, Asjha Jones and Tina Charles, continue to play in the northeast as members of the Connecticut Sun.

2012 Olympic Medal Count: United States Takes The Top Spot

Now that the curtain has come down on the 2012 London Olympics, it's time to look back and reflect on what has happened over the past two memorable weeks.

Some of the best moments were authored by the United States, which finished in the top spot with 104 medals. Out of those, 46 were of the gold variety.

Five local athletes took home a combined five of those gold medals, including Aly Raisman (won two), Tina Charles, Ashja Jones and Eleanor Logan. Elizabeth Beisel earned two silver medals in the pool while Raisman also claimed a bronze.

Overall here are the final standings in the medal count:

United States: 104 - (46 Gold, 29 Silver, 29 Bronze)
China: 87 - (38 Gold, 27 Silver, 22 Bronze)
Russia: 82 - (24 Gold, 25 Silver, 33 Bronze)

U.S. Medal Count: 5 Boston Area Athletes Take Home Hardware

The United States was the big winner at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, winning 104 medals over two weeks of competition. The Boston area did its part to help the cause. Five athletes with ties to the region won medals in seven different events. Women's gymnast Aly Raisman won three on her own, providing some of the biggest highlights of the games.

London Olympics 2012 Final Medal Count: U.S. Finishes With Most Golds, Overall Medals

The United States closed out their performances in the 2012 London Olympics on Sunday by taking home the most gold medals and total overall medals. The highlight of the day for the U.S. was the Team USA Men's Basketball beating Spain, 107-100, in the Gold Medal game.

The U.S. also won the gold in the men's freestyle 211.5 pound wrestling competition (Jake Varner). The two gold medals completed the U.S. record gold medal haul (46) for an Olympics held outside of the United States.

Olympics Closing Ceremony 2012: TV Schedule, Watch Online, Live Updates And More

If you put several thousand of the world's best athletes in a stadium and make them all listen to Adele, do they all cry simultaneously?

London 2012's organizers had a shrewd way of finding out: booking her for the Closing Ceremony. They will then be cheered up by the Spice Girls, and the Who and many other acts will perform as well. The closing event of the Olympics is basically a concert, as opposed to the opening one, which is a combo historical reenactment/parade, and it will take place Sunday night as a successful summer games comes to a close with America on top of the medal table. The ceremony will presumably feature a hand off of hosting duties to Rio de Janeiro, who will host the 2016 games.

The ceremonies will begin via tape delay at 8:30 p.m. on NBC, but unlike the Opening Ceremony, will also be live-streamd starting at 4 p.m. on NBC's official Olympics website, if you can't wait to see it live.

Team USA Wins Basketball Gold Over Spain, 107-100

Coach Mike Krzyzewski ended his tenure as head coach of Team USA with a second consecutive gold medal as the United States fended off a strong effort by Spain to win, 107-100.

Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30 as the Americans nailed 15 threes, continuing their incredible shooting on the tournament. Former Memphis point guard Juan Carlos Navarro had a ridiculous 19 first-half points to make the game 59-58 at the half, while Pau Gasol actually put Spain in the lead in the third quarter, as he finished with 24. But the shots kept falling for the US while Spain's wouldn't, as the Spaniards didn't hit any triples in the second half after a scorching first half from beyond the arc.

Durant was helped by LeBron James, who had 19, including a late three-pointer, and Kobe Bryant, who had 17 points in his final Olympic game.

With Coach K stepping down from his role, Celtics coach and NBC analyst Doc Rivers speculated on-air that he would entertain the concept of being in charge of the American Olympic team in future, although that's little more than speculation.

2012 London Olympics Medal Count: U.S. First Country To Eclipse Triple Digit Medals

With just one day remaining at the 2012 London Olympics, the United States has opened up a large lead over second place China in the medal count. The U.S. became the first country to eclipse the triple digit medal mark on Saturday, taking home eight overall.

Two members of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, Tina Charles and Asjha Jones, were awarded with a gold following the U.S.A's 86-50 blowout victory over France.
