2012 MLB Draft: Deven Marrero, Boston Red Sox Reportedly Agree To Terms

The Boston Red Sox and their top selection in the 2012 MLB Draft, Arizona State shortstop Deven Marrero, have agreed to terms, reports Jim Callis of Baseball America.

Marrero, the 24th overall pick, reportedly agreed on a $2.05 million signing bonus. He hit .286 at Arizona State this past season, but scouts see him as a line-drive hitter with potential to develop more power as he matures.

Even if Marrero becomes a slugger down the road, his best contributions might come at shortstop: His Cape league coach, Mike Roberts, considers Marrero one of the best defensive prospects he's ever seen.

"He's the best amateur baseball player on the defensive side I've ever seen in 35 years of coaching," Roberts said. "He's Omar Vizquel at 20, 21, except he'll be a better hitter and steal more bases. I've seen him do things defensively I've never seen another infielder do."

2012 MLB Draft: Red Sox Sign High School Football Star, Shaq Thompson

According to Joe Davidson, of the Sacramento Bee, the Boston Red Sox have officially signed their 18th round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, Shaq Thompson.

Thompson has already reported to Boston's spring training facility in Fort Myers, Fla. for workouts. He will play for the club's Rookie Level Gulf Coast League. Thompson said he needs to work on his hitting - he had 18 hits and 18 strikeouts this spring in batting .305 - but he is confident of his defensive abilities. Thompson has exceptional speed in the outfield and on the base paths, and he has a strong arm.

Thompson will also play safety for the University of Washington in the fall. Despite his committment to football, he's an interesting addition to the Red Sox farm system.

Said Grant baseball coach Danny Chavez recently, "I just know the kid has a phenomenal arm and all the speed in the world, and he can track any ball down. He has that great athletic ability and great mental approach, and he's such a quality young man, so why not take a chance on putting him in your organization? This game is all about potential and he's got amazing potential."

2012 MLB Draft Reaction: Boston Red Sox Round 1 Pick Deven Marrero A Steal, Writes ESPN's Keith Law

The Boston Red Sox got a steal at the end of the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft when they selected shortstop Deven Marrero, writes ESPN's Keith Law.

During an MLB Draft reaction piece, Law summarizes Boston's draft as follows:

<offer>Summary: Deven Marrero (1) came into the year as a probable top-five pick, a true shortstop who had hit everywhere he'd played, with metal and with wood. Getting him at No. 24 is a steal, especially since his down year might be due to some fixable mechanical issues in his swing. Brian Johnson (1) is a safe college starter with No. 3 ceiling but probably No. 4-5 floor because he commands his off-speed stuff. Pat Light (1A) has a power arm and plus slider but might profile better in the bullpen, although I'd let him start first. Jamie Callahan (2) was one of the top prep arms in a down South Carolina class, topping out in the low 90s with feel for a curveball.Austin Maddox (3) is a power reliever (and sometime third baseman) with plus-plus control, walking just four of 196 batters he faced this year (excluding intentionals), although he did show a modest platoon split this year as a two-pitch guy. Ty Buttrey (4) had first-round potential when he was hitting 92-95 mph early but saw his velocity slide as his season went on. He remained popular with scouts for being one of the fastest workers in the draft this year; he'll be Boston's toughest sign. The Red Sox went heavy on college seniors after that but did take Vanderbilt commit Carson Fulmer (15) late on Day 2; he's up to 94 with good secondary and a violent delivery.</offer>

2012 MLB Draft Order: Day 3 For The Boston Red Sox

The 2012 MLB Draft is coming to a close on Wednesday evening, with rounds 16 through 40 set to get underway and subsequently be completed.

As always, the draft is an incredibly long and drawn out, yet exciting, process that isn't rivaled by any other sport. Think about it in comparison to basketball, which only has two rounds. The scouting that goes into baseball drafts is just mind-blowing.

With all of that said, the Boston Red Sox have been doing some heavy lifting so far, taking a pair of shortstops and a wide variety of pitchers.

Boston will draft in the 23th spot of each round for the remainder of the draft. The Red Sox will have ample opportunity to stock up the minor league system, something that needs to be done considering the age of many major league players on the team now.

For more on the Red Sox, please be sure to visit our blog Over The Monster and SB Nation Boston for all the latest news and updates.

2012 MLB Draft Results: Boston Red Sox Select Florida Pitcher Austin Maddox In Round 3

The Boston Red Sox selected University of Florida relief pitcher Austin Maddox with the 118th pick in the third round of the MLB Draft on Tuesday.

The full scouting report for Maddox, a 6'4, 230-pound lefty, follows courtesy of MLB.com's Draft Tracker:

A former two-way standout, Maddox's hitting days will be over soon as it's clear his future is on the mound as a reliever. Florida's closer has an above-average fastball that he can dial up to plus, hitting 93 mph consistently. It has above-average sink when down in the zone and run/bore when it's up. Maddox's breaking ball is slurvy, but is a tick above-average at times. He does have a changeup, but it's below-average and it's easy to see it being shelved at the next level. He throws strikes, more control than command, and has the kind of mentality to pitch at the back end of the bullpen. Maddox began his Florida career only hitting, so it's been a full transformation to a guy who will be pitching only as professional. He has the chance to pitch in short relief in the big leagues in the near future.
