Jacoby Ellsbury Injury Update: Boston Red Sox Star Takes Batting Practice Thursday

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury took batting practice on Thursday as he continues rehabilitation from a subluxation of his right shoulder.

According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, Ellsbury took batting practice for six minutes and "looked to be swinging with full effort."

The 28-year old has not played since April 13, when he tried to break up a double-play attempt at second base and collided with Rays' second baseman Reid Brignac. ESPN reported Wednesday that a minor league rehab assignment should come "sooner rather than later" if Ellsbury's progression continues at its current pace.

Last season, Ellsbury finished second behind Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander in American League MVP voting after batting .321 with 32 home runs, 105 RBI and 39 stolen bases.

Jacoby Ellsbury Injury Update: Red Sox Center Fielder Doesn't Require Immediate Surgery

In a disastrous start to the season for the Boston Red Sox (sound familiar?), some good news has come down.

Jacoby Ellsbury, who suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder, will not require immediate surgery to fix the injury, according to ESPN.com. Instead, time and rehabilitation will be in order for now.

Manager Bobby Valentine is cautiously optimistic.

"He had some hand manipulation for range of motion. They're trying to take it slowly to get it better. I don't know that there is anything on the horizon other than normal treatment and see how he does day by day," Valentine said.

While it's still a big blow to have Ellsbury on the shelf for any extended period of time, it could have been far worse. Many have put his timetable to return at six weeks.

In the meantime, Boston fans have to be hoping that this team can pull together after the 18-3 shelling it took last night at the hands of the defending American League champion Texas Rangers.

Jacoby Ellsbury Injury Update: Red Sox Release Statement On Injured Center Fielder

The Red Sox have confirmed what was first widely speculated and then later acknowledged by Jacoby Ellsbury himself: the center fielder has a subluxed (dislocated) shoulder:

STATEMENT FROM THE BOSTON RED SOX REGARDING JACOBY ELLSBURY

Jacoby injured his right shoulder during yesterday’s game. An MRI was performed and showed findings consistent with a subluxed shoulder. We are in the process of gathering further information and determining the treatment plan. Jacoby will be placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to today’s game.

While each case is different, the recovery period being thrown around for such an injury is 4-6 weeks. More concerning, however, is the possibility that the injury could fail to heal with simple rehab, and may eventually require surgery if it proves difficult.

In the meantime, the Sox have called up Che-Hsuan Lin to provide added depth to the outfield.

Boston Red Sox Outfielder, Jacoby Ellsbury, suffered a shoulder subluxation in the fourth inning of Friday's game. The team has decided to place Ellsbury on the 15-day disabled list.

The 28 year old is coming off the best season of his career – a year in which he was a serious MVP candidate in the American League. Ellsbury finished the season with 32 home runs, 105 runs batted in, 39 steals, 119 runs scored and a batting average of .321. His WAR of 9.4 was the highest of any player, with Matt Kemp placing second at 8.7.

Ellsbury has gotten off to a slow start in 2012, batting just .192, without a home run or a stolen base.

Jacoby Ellsbury tweeted Saturday morning that the injury he suffered during Friday's 12-2 win against the Tampa Bay Rays is a shoulder subluxation.

According to Ellsbury, there is no timetable for his return, but injuries of a similar nature typically require 4 to 6 weeks of recovery, and potentially more time depending on whether he suffered any further damage to his surrounding muscles or tendons.

Ellsbury was injured during the bottom of the fourth inning when he slid into second base in an attempt to break up a double play. The clean slide made contact with Rays shortstop Reid Brignac, who fell on Ellsbury's shoulder after completing the double play.

Losing Ellsbury for an extended period of time will surely hurt the Red Sox, who are now prepared to call up a player for Saturday's game against Tampa Bay. Ellsbury finished second in the 2011 AL MVP voting after batting .321 with 32 home runs and 105 RBI.

Valentine is prepared to call up a player for Saturday's game against the Rays. Valentine also said that his liked how Cody Ross played in center field after Ellsbury left the game. However, he did not rule out Darnell McDonald or Ryan Sweeney in center (via Providence Journal).

Ellsbury was injured sliding into second base while trying to break up a double play. Rays' second baseman Reid Brignac fell on Ellsbury's right shoulder during a collision. Ellsbury is having further evaluation done on the shoulder and no other information is available at this time. He was hitting .192 with three RBI and four walks this season.

Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury left Friday's home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park during the fourth inning with an undisclosed shoulder injury.

Ellsbury's injury occurred when he tried to break up a double play attempt. Ellsbury slid hard feet first into second base and then collided with Rays' second baseman Reid Brignac. Brignac fell on top of Ellsbury's right shoulder after following through on his throw to first base.

The 28-year-old 2011 AL MVP runner-up left the field holding his right shoulder. Ellsbury was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the game before the injury. For the season, Ellsbury was hitting just .192 with 3 RBI, four walks and three strikeouts.

Cody Ross was moved into center field after the injury. Ryan Sweeney was also inserted into the game at the right field spot.

Jacoby Ellsbury Injury Update: Red Sox CF Has Right Shoulder Injury

Jacoby Ellsbury left his team's game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth inning after a collision with infielder Reid Brignac, who landed on Ellsbury's right shoulder while he was sliding into second base during a routine double play. Ellsbury was diagnosed with a "right shoulder injury" by the team and will be re-evaluated later.

Ellsbury remained on the ground for several minutes after Brignac made impact and was clutching his right shoulder. He was helped up and walked back to the clubhouse. Cody Ross moved to center field and Ryan Sweeney moved to right following Ellsbury's injury.

Unfortunately, this is not the first bout with injury for Ellsbury, who missed a significant portion of the 2010 season (he only played 18 games) after colliding with then Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre during a game against the Kansas City Royals on April 11. Ellsbury, then playing left field, collided with Beltre's knee and fractured four ribs.

Ellsbury was batting .192 with zero home runs and three RBI entering Friday's game.
