With captain and midfield general Shalrie Joseph suffering from an adductor injury and striker Jose Moreno out with an ankle sprain, head coach Jay Heaps had several important decisions to make regarding his lineup. He didn't shy away from making some moves that are sure to raise eyebrows.
Clyde Simms has recovered enough from his tendonitis issues to replace Joseph in the starting lineup, giving Heaps the holding presence he needs in the middle. Simms' simple game of clogging lanes and playing easy passes will free Benny Feilhaber up the middle and Lee Nguyen and Kelyn Rowe out wide.
Up top, to deal with the absence of Moreno, fans and analysts could be forgiven for expecting Heaps to go with Blake Brettschneider, but instead he has elected to start Leominster wonderkid Diego Fagundez up top with Saer Sene. Fagundez is less of an out-and-out striker than Sene, but it is still not the typical target forward/pure striker setup that Heaps has preferred this season.
Notable for Toronto FC, it appears that Luis Silva is on the bench tonight. This after he was arrested in Houston along with teammates Miguel Aceval and Nick Soolsma for a rumored drunken brawl outside a nightclub. It was later reported that Silva had recently lost his father before the incident, and that he had only gone to the club in the first place to pick up Soolsma and Aceval.
Bench: Shuttleworth, Lechner, Lozano, Brettschneider, Barnes, Purdie, Cardenas
Bench: Roberts, Stinson, Maund, Silva, Williams, Lambe, Emory
