Revolution Vs. DC United: Santos Strikes For United, New England Down 3-2

The New England Revolution enjoyed level scores for only eleven minutes before the home side re-asserted their lead. Maicon Santos took advantage of lax defending from the Revolution to power his side ahead 3-2.

The move started with Santos, as the Brazilian turned two New England defenders before slotting an excellent pass to Dwayne De Rosario. The reigning MLS MVP took the ball to the byline down the left, then cut the ball back to the top of the eighteen. Santos had continued his run and picked that moment to make a late entrance into the box, and no Revs defender tracked him, allowing the striker to use his left foot to fire past Matt Reis and give his team the lead.

The Revolution nearly had a third themselves before that when Saer Sene was again through on goal against Hamid, but this time as Sene attempted to take a touch around the rushing goalkeeper, Hamid managed to take it off the Frenchman's feet and snuff the opportunity.

As of the 70th minute, the Revolution have also burned their final two substitutions: Kelyn Rowe replaced Lee Nguyen and Jose Moreno is on for Blake Brettschneider.

Revolution Vs. DC United Score Update: Saer Sene And AJ Soares Score Quick To Tie It Up At 2-2

After an abysmal first half, it only took the New England Revolution about three minutes to get some spark back against D.C. United. Then, it took them maybe two more to turn the match on its head and level the scores.

In the 48th minute, Shalrie Joseph slipped a simple midfield pass to Benny Feilhaber. Benny then teed up a laser from 25 yards out that forced Bill Hamid to slap away. His save wasn't quite as good as it needed to be, however, as the rebound fell easily to Saer Sene in the box, who tucked it home with the left foot to put the Revs right back in the match.

As United attempted to deal with New England's new-found confidence and verve, the Revolution took advantage of the shock and put another one away to draw level with their hosts. Chris Tierney lined up a corner, and for once it was the Revolution who were scoring from a set-piece as his delivery found A.J. Soares at the near post. The second-year man made no mistake, nodding the ball down and to the far post to put United on their heels.

Head coach Jay Heaps must have said something incendiary and inspiring, because the Revolution have looked a different team in the second half.

Revolution Vs. DC United Score Update: Jakovic Gives United 2-0 Lead At The Half

The New England Revolution are 2-0 down going into the halftime break, and they again have a set piece to blame for it. After allowing Brandon McDonald to score the opener in the 15th minute off of a free kick, an abject failure to stay organized and clear their lines resulted in the Revs allowing a second goal to Dejan Jakovic from a scrum caused by a corner kick.

The set piece reached the head of a United player (appeared to be Dwayne De Rosario), who rose essentially uncontested and drilled a header on frame. It was blocked on the way there, but the Revs failed to clear, causing a game of pinball in the box. Eventually it was Jakovic who got his foot to the ball and stuffed it home from barely six yards out.

New England's half didn't get off to a great start. In the 28th minute, after watching DC take the lead not long before, Ryan Guy was removed due to injury and replaced with Fernando Cardenas, forcing Benny Feilhaber to move centrally. The Revs really only managed one clear chance on goal. In the 38th minute, Feilhaber played a slashing through ball from behind the centerline that caught Saer Sene in full flight on goal. Sene took a few touches and tried to nutmeg 'keeper Bill Hamid, but the DC man's reflexes were superior and he just managed to direct the ball wide with his knee.

Revolution Vs. DC United Score Update: McDonald Header Gives DC An Early 1-0 Lead

The New England Revolution have an Achilles heel, and it's set pieces. In just the 15th minute, D.C. United discovered that weakness and exploited it, taking a 1-0 lead through a Brandon McDonald header off of a free kick by Branko Boskovic.

Boskovic, United's all-but-forgotten Designated Player, lofted in a free-kick from about fifty yards away from goal. Brandon McDonald slipped behind Shalrie Joseph and in front of A.J. Soares, then leaped to get his head on the ball. Matt Reis was drifting in no-man's land and could do nothing about the ball as it looped into the far corner of the net.

The set-piece goal marks the sixth time this season that the Revs have conceded from dead-ball situations, and the fourth time from a free kick specifically. Last week, New England gave up a goal from a free kick against Houston in the first half en route to a 2-2 draw.
