The New England Patriots offseason hasn't been as dramatic as their AFC East rival opponents the New York Jets, but it soon might make a run at it. That's because wide receiver Wes Welker apparently isn't happy about his new franchise tag and is considering sitting out mandatory minicamps to get a long-term deal done.

"I’m thinking I’m probably not going to (attend mandatory workouts), but things could change," Welker said. "We’ll just see how it all plays out."

Welker, who's set to make $9.5 million from the franchise tag, said this during a radio interview with ESPN Boston Radio. The Pro Bowl wide out said he understands how the Patriots franchise works, especially under head coach Belichick, but admitted he hasn't been a part of voluntary workouts because of the contract situation and could make the same stance come June 12, when mandatory workouts begin.

The Patriots and Welker have until mid-July to workout a new deal.
