Patriots Offseason 2012, Wes Welker: Pats Will Use Franchise Tag On Wide Receiver

Stay connected for news and updates

Yesterday, we heard word that while discussions were ongoing between the New England Patriots and Wes Welker, there had yet to be a breakthrough in talks. Now, it appears the Patriots fans shouldn't worry about Welker going anywhere else--at least next season.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots will likely use the franchise tag on Wes Welker. Sources tell Schefter that the Patriots will continue talking to Welker, but they won't hesitate to tag him if there is no deal in place before the March 5 deadline. The franchise tag has an estimated value of $9.5 million for one year.

Welker has been a tremendous asset to this Patriots offense since he joined the team in 2007. Since coming to New England, Welker has racked up 554 receptions for 6,105 yards and 31 touchdowns.
