The New England Patriots defeated the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field on Sunday, 34-27. The Patriots needed the passing game to be working as the ground game was not at its best. New England tight end Aaron Hernandez was part of a receiving corps which gashed the Redskins for 16.2 yards per catch and three touchdowns.
Hernandez finished with 5 receptions (out of 7 targets) and 84 yards (16.8 average). Only Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker were targeted more often by quarterback Tom Brady. Hernandez had a catch of 29 yards in the third quarter as his long reception for the day. That grab was his second of two on a scoring drive which ended up being the game-winning drive for New England.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has only thrown two red-zone interceptions during the 2011 season. His second came in today's game against the Washington Redskins.
Clinging to a one touchdown lead in the fourth quarter, the Patriots had a chance to put some distance between themselves and Washington in the red-zone. On 3rd and four from the Washington 4-yard line, Brady tried to hit wide receiver Tiquan Underwood in the end-zone but was picked off by Josh Wilson, who got away with a jersey tug on Underwood before the interception. After returning to the sidelines, Brady got into a shouting match with his offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.
Players and coaches had to step in to separate O'Brien from Brady. The Patriots held on to win the game 34-27.

The New England Patriots improve to 10-3 on the season to keep their hopes for a number 1 seed alive, squeaking out a 34-27 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday afternoon.
Tom Brady finished with an impressive 22/37 for 357 yards and three touchdowns, although he did throw his first interception since the Patriots' last loss against the Giants on Nov. 6th. Almost as impressive though was the performance that Rex Grossman put on, completing 19 of his 32 pass attempts for 252 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
There have been a few times this year when it's looked like the Patriots would be in for a shootout; examples being the game against the Cowboys in which the score was 10-13 at the half and the game against the Giants in which the score was 0-3 at the half. Needless to say, their matchup against the Washington Redskins was certainly not touted as one of those games.
Yet that's exactly what it was. When the halftime whistles were blown the score was 20-20, and Grossman had completed 9 passes for 145 yards and 1 touchdown compared to Brady's 8 completions for 166 yards and 1 touchdown; and many more touchdowns were yet to come.
Game Recap
The first half of this game was more productive and exciting than many of the Patriots' first half showings this year; but at time it resembled a circus sideshow more than it did an NFL football game.
The first score of the game came when Vince Wilfork recovered a Rex Grossman fumble in his own end zone for a touchdown to go up 7-0 early in the game. The Redskins responded with a 24 yard field goal from Graham Gano, after the Patriots put up another one of their signature goal line stands after a 75 yard drive.
The next Patriots possession featured a short yardage Brady pass to Rob Gronkowski who proceeded to shake tackles all the way down the field for a 49 yard gain; going on to catch the 11 yard touchdown pass that put them up 14-3. The touchdown drive produced 60 yards on two plays.
A Jabar Gaffney 9 yard touchdown catch put the Redskins back into a one possession game, and the Skins were not messing around with their opportunity to pull ahead. On their first play of the second quarter, Kyle Shanahan's offense ran a trick play that featured wide receiver Brandon Banks coming out of the shotgun to throw a deep pass to Santana Moss that turned into a touchdown. The score gave the Redskins their first lead of the game at 14-10, and a pair of Stephen Gostkowski field goals and another one from Graham Gano rounded out the half to keep the game tied.
In the third quarter, both teams picked up the pace. The Patriots drew first blood by scoring on their first drive of the second half on a, you guessed it, Brady to Gronkowski touchdown pass. You know the one I'm talking about - the one where Brady completes it to Gronk in some amount of double or triple coverage and he shakes a tackle to go 39 yards for the score.
Not to be outdone, the suddenly and inexplicably efficient Grossman led the Washington offense 76 yards on 10 plays, culminating in a 6 yard touchdown pass to David Anderson; the third Redskins receiver to catch a touchdown pass on the day to put the game back in a tie at 27-27.
The final touchdown and final scoring play of the game though came on the 24 yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker, putting the Patriots up 34-27 for good, as the fourth quarter featured futile efforts by both teams to advance the score. The Redskins had the ball in the red zone with under a minute to go, but couldn't convert on third down and the game ended on a Jerod Mayo interception.
Defensive Struggles and Highlights
Although the Patriots secondary has struggled all season long, it looked today as if it's regressing. Grossman did damage across the middle all day long with Donte Stallworth, and Devin McCourty and Kyle Arrington failed to ever really maintain coverage on Santana Moss and Jabar Gaffney.
Defensive highlights once again belonged the Patriots' defensive line, as well as Washington's secondary which seemed to have red jerseys swarming every receiver on the other end of a Brady pass. Second year defensive end Brandon Deaderick had a great game, contributing five tackles including a sack, another tackle for a loss and a quarterback hit. Andre Carter once again was a nightmare for the opposing quarterback all afternoon, sacking him once and hitting him three other times.
Looking Ahead
Week 15 will feature the Patriots playing a highly anticipated 4:15 game in Denver against Tim Tebow...and his team, the Broncos.

It's been a very back-and-forth game in Washington so far, but one that seems to follow a schedule:
1. Patriots' secondary plays terribly, allowing Redskins to score at least three points.
2. Rob Gronkowski does something amazing, allowing Patriots to score at least three points.
3. Referees make remarkably bad calls, there is much gnashing of teeth.
The third quarter was for the most part no different, albeit with a bit of Wes Welker and a twist ending.
It was the aforementioned Welker who got the Patriots rolling to start the third quarter, picking up two quick receptions and drawing a pass interference call on DeAngelo Hall, who gave up 15 more free yards when he picked up the yellow flag and hurled it downfield. A holding penalty on Matt Light set up a 2nd-and-12 which seemed likely to stall the drive, but after Tom Brady overthrew Rob Gronkowski on second down, he made a soft touch pass over Gronkowski's shoulder, setting him loose. First dragging Ryan Kerrigan behind him, than leaving him in the dirt, Gronkowski once again broke off a big run-after-catch, this time for his second touchdown of the game.
The Patriots seemed poised to get a stop on the ensuing Washington drive, but once again the referees reared their ugly heads. When Evan Royster tripped and fell on a screen pass, Vince WIlfork made the tackle to leave him down by contact...and drew a flag. In the opinions of the referee, Wilfork's arm in Royster's back was too rough for the NFL, and so the Redskins were set up with free first down in the red zone. One terrible bit of coverage from James Ihedigbo in the end zone later and it was all tied up.
Not content to give their defense any time to rest, Tom Brady and the offense took the field again, and made quick work of their drive. After converting one set of downs, Brady found Aaron Hernandez about eight yards from the line of scrimmage. With a couple of jukes, the tight end quickly turned it into 29, bringing the Patriots into Washington territory. The next strike went to Wes Welker for 16 yards, as did the third, with Welker breaking a run into the end zone this time to make it 34-27.
That's when the twist ending came in. While it looked like business as usual for the Patriots' defense on the next drive, quickly letting the Redskins find their way into New England territory, a surprising pair of incomplete passes from the Skins left Washington forcd to punt for the first time in a long while. New England will start the fourth quarter with a chance to actually take a two score lead.

The Patriots find themselves embroiled in a shootout, as both New England and Washington have put up 20 points a piece in the first half.
The Redskins started the second quarter with a fresh drive, trailing 14-10, and went with a bit of trickery to really take advantage of the secondary that's plagued the Patriots all game. With Brandon Banks getting the ball on a reverse, Santana Moss raced downfield, catching New England completely off guard when Banks pulled up and found him with a long ball around the 10-yard line. Shedding a weak tackle, he traipsed into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.
The lead wouldn't last for very long, with the Patriots converting three third downs on the next series as Brady found Wes Welker and Chad Ochocinco for the first times on the day. Set up with a 2nd-and-2 just five yards out, however, the Patriots went to a curious selection of plays, throwing twice towards the end zone and--with a big hit on a possibly defenseless Gronkowski knocking a potential second touchdown away--had to settle for the field goal.
Officiating controversies would emerge over the last pair of drives in the half. As the Redskins returned to picking apart the defense, it seemed a combination of pressure and a diving grab from Devin McCourty had finally provided New England with a break. But a roughing the passer call on Andre Carter, who hit Rex Grossman low as the former was falling forward and the latter was running backwards erased McCourty's first interception of the season, and gave the Redskins the opportunity to put up a field goal to retake the lead.
It was another hit on a quarterback that brought criticism in the direction of the officiating crew on New England's drive, with Tom Brady scrambling and being hit hard by London Fletcher on a late slide after Rob Gronkowski's 50-yard catch-and-run had brought New England deep into enemy territory to begin with. Fletcher's penalty wouldn't really make much of a difference, however, as more miscommunication between Tom Brady and his receivers left New England forced to put up another field goal in the end to knot the game up headed into the half.

New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski official broke the NFL single-season record for touchdown receptions by a tight end Sunday, as Gronkowski caught a 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Brady in the second quarter of the Pats' Week 14 contest against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field in Landover, MD. The original record for a tight end (13) was set by San Diego Charger tight end Anotnio Gates in 2004.
Gronkowski's catch helped New England take a 14-3 lead over the Redskins. Gronkowski, who last week broke the single-season, all-purpose touchdown record with a running score, capped a two-play, 60-yard drive that was highlighted by a Gronkowski 49-yard reception that came on the drive's first play.
Here's the video of the record-setting touchdown catch:

The Patriots' defense got off to a strong start, immediately forcing a 3-and-out with a pair of incomplete passes and heading back to the sidelines hoping for a nice long Patriots drive. And after one play, it looked like they were going to get their wish, as Tom Brady found Aaron Hernandez, who broke a 15-yard run after the catch. The momentum died in a hurry, however, as Brady suffered a rare streak of three straight incomplete passes, forcing a punt.
With their wishes unfulfilled by the offense, but given tremendous field position by a great special teams play on the punt, the defense decided to get the job done on their own. Stuck inside their own 5-yard line, the Redskins didn't find any yards on the first two plays, and on the third Rex Grossman took a bit too much time. Right as he prepared to throw, former Redskin Andre Carter found him in his own end zone, knocking the ball free. With at least a safety ensured, Vince Wilfork managed to dive on the ball and come away from the pile with it when the bodies had been cleared for his first career touchdown.
Staying on the field after the ensuing kickoff, the defense finally found themselves tested, with beleaguered sophomore cornerback Devin McCourty being their target of choice. On 3rd-and-9, Grossman let loose with a long ball to Donte Stallworth, who had a step on McCourty. The ball dropped in over Stallworth's shoulder, setting the Redskins up inside the red zone.
That, however, is where the Patriots shine. After Stallworth again helped Washington convert on third down, the Patriots kept the Skins out of the end zone for two plays, drew a false start with a shift on the defensive line, and then forced Grossman to lob the ball out the back of the end zone, leaving them with only a field goal to show for their efforts.
With Washington's kickoff going out of bounds, the Patriots started their next drive from the 40-yard line. They would have only two plays. The first is the type that will grace highlight reels for a good while to come, as Rob Gronkowski laid out for a catch, got back to his feet untouched, and was mobbed by a pair of Redskins who were hanging off his back as he made his way to the sideline--where he promptly shook both of them off and then took off towards the end zone. By the time the Redskins managed to take him down, the ball was just 11 yards from pay dirt. The next play covered all of those yards, with Brady again finding Rob Gronkowski for the score which broke the record for tight end receiving touchdowns in a season.
Down 14-3, the Redskins knew they needed a drive, and again made it happen with the help of Devin McCourty. It was number 32 who gave up a pass interference penalty on a 3rd-and-18 play, and after a few more big plays got them into the red zone, allowed Jabar Gaffney to run free in the end zone, where Grossman found him for a touchdown.
The Patriots have sent it back Washington's way with a 3-and-out as the quarter comes to a close, so Washington will have a chance to grab the lead with the first drive of the second.

The New England Patriots struck early in their Week 14 NFL contest against the Washington Redskins, and surprisingly it wasn't the Pats' offense that put points on the board. Instead. it was veteran defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, who recovered a fumbled by Washington quarterback Rex Grossman in the endzone just 2:43 seconds into the game.
Patriots defensive end Andre Carter forced the fumble by sacking and stripping Grossman, who dropped back to pass on a 3-and-9 from his own four-yard line. Wilfork was in the right place at the right time and jumped on the ball and helped New England take a 7-0 advantage.
Here's a video of the play:
The touchdown was Wilfork's second of the season. A few weeks back, Wilfork returned an interception for a touchdown against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football.

In less than a half hour, the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins will face each other at FedEx Field in Landover, MD, and it looks as if both teams will not only be battling each other, but sloppy field conditions. According to CSNNE.com's Patriots insider Tom E. Curran, FedEx Field is in bad shape after Saturday's Army-Navy game, which featured the Midshipman beating the Black Knights, 27-21.
On his blog, Curran said this:
"Kicker Stephen Gostkowski's performance will likely be impacted some since the area chewed up is between the hashes."
"The sidelines on the Redskins side of the field is also pretty beat up, especially near the goal line."
"And the end zones still say "ARMY" and "NAVY."
"But Mike Shanahan says the turf isn't that bad in his estimation."
If the field is in rough shape, it may slow down the passing attack of the Patriots, who face the league's ninth-best passing defense of the Redskins. New England's shifty slot receiver Wes Welker also could be slowed down a bit.
