Patriots vs. Jets: Record Breaking Night for Brady, Carter Helps Patriots Seal AFC East Lead

It was a night of records for the New England Patriots in their 37-16 win over the New York Jets in the Meadowlands.

Tom Brady surpassed Joe Montana for career 300-yard passing games. Perhaps even more impressive, Bill Belichick and Brady have surpassed Don Shula and Dan Marino as the Coach/QB tandem with the most wins together; now at 117.  It's worth noting it took them far fewer games to get there as well.

Before this game it seemed it would take an absolutely spectacular performance by the New England defense to impress and show signs of a possible turn around from the back-to-back losses. Tonight was that night.

The score tells part of the story, but certainly not all of it, as the safety position continued to get thinner with Pat Chung out of tonight's lineup. By the final quarter, the defensive backfield consisted of Devin McCourty and some guys named Ross Ventrone, Philip Adams and Sterling Moore. Holy practice squad.

But performing in the clutch was Rob Ninkovich who came out with his biggest showing of the year, grabbing both of Sanchez's interceptions and returning one of them from a touchdown. That was just to add to Andre Carter's franchise record 4.5 sacks on Jets quarterback. Mark Anderson contributed the other half of the fifth sack to round out an unfortunate night for Sanchez who finished with just one touchdown and a QB rating of 64.7

Tom Brady on the other hand gave a performance worthy of his legacy, and of his record-breaking night, going 26/39 for 329 yards and 3 touchdowns. He started the game off shaky, looking slightly inaccurate and throwing with reduced velocity. In fact the whole first half was fairly unremarkable; besides the two Ochocinco catches for 65 yards, making it his best game of the season so far.

Although it wasn't as low scoring as last week's 0-0 against the Giants, until the waning seconds of the first half the score looked like it belonged to a baseball game.

In the first drive of the game, Mark Sanchez marched his team down the field in what seemed like a great way to set the tone for the Jets at home in MetLife Stadium. Yet after what-should-have-been-a-shocking-turn-of-events-but-wasn't-really, the Jets were stifled in the red zone and forced to attempt the field goal; which Nick Folk promptly shanked. The missed opportunity proved to be the start of a very long night for the green and white.

With just a pair of field goals from Stephen Gostkowski, Brady and the offense got the ball back with 1:20 to go in the half, and they began their usual last minute magic. With a little help from some Jets penalties, they converted five first downs in a row, culminating the drive with an 18 yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. It was Brady's first touchdown of the game, and it brought the score to a whopping 13-9 as the second quarter clock wound down.

Obviously the second half belonged to the visiting team, as the Patriots scored four times including Gronkowski's second touchdown, an 8 yard TD catch by Deion Branch and Ninkovich's pick 6.

The fourth quarter was a particularly disastrous one for Sanchez, as he threw eight incompletions and got sacked on two consecutive plays by Carter.

The Jets' only scoring play in the second half came on the first play of the fourth quarter when Sanchez connected with Plaxico Burress to reduce the Patriots' lead to 7. New England took over for good after that.

The Pats now have sole possession of first place in the AFC East, improving to 6-3 and maintaining a significant edge over the Jets with the season sweep. The Buffalo Bills join the Jets at 5-4 after getting blown out by the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

New England will prepare this week for another primetime game, this time taking on the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football at Gillette Stadium.

Patriots 23, Jets 9, End 3rd: Turnovers Help Pats Build Lead

A pair of turnovers from the New York Jets led to 10 more Patriots points in the third quarter, building their lead to 23-9 with just 15 minutes to go.

The Patriots were in bad position to start off the half, with a penalty pushing them back to their own 10 on the opening kickoff. Predictably, the drive didn't go very far, and Zoltan Mesko could only just barely push the Jets back into their own territory with his punt.

The defense, however, was there to save the day. A 3-and-out led to a touchback, giving the Pats some room to work with. Initially, the Pats came up short, gaining just six yards on a 3rd-and-7, but the Jets were ready to make up for it. Zoltan Mesko's punt bounced off Joe McKnight's chest and through his arms, and the Patriots fell on the ball to set up Tom Brady with excellent field position.

For a minute, it seemed like Tom Brady had made good on that position. On a 3rd-and-11 play that seemed to last an eternity, Brady dodged defenders, stepped up, and eventually found a diving Rob Gronkowski in the end zone. Instead of six, though, the Patriots walked away with a five-yard penalty, as Gronkowski had gone out of bounds before catching the touchdown pass. The next play didn't pick up the 11 yards they needed, and the Patriots would have to settle for three.

They would not be without their touchdown for long, however. On the ensuing drive Mark Sanchez' pass to Shonn Greene was tipped first by Greene, then by Jerod Mayo, eventually finding its way into the arms of Rob Ninkovich for the interception. Splitting the load equally between the air and ground, the Pats made their way to the New York 5-yard line, where Brady and Gronkowski made up for their missed opportunity with a 3rd down touchdown pass that would hold up, putting the Patriots on top by two touchdowns.

Patriots 13, Jets 9, Halftime: Last-Minute Drive Leaves Pats On Top At Half

A successful two-minute drill from Tom Brady allowed the New England Patriots to wrench momentum away from the Jets heading into the half.

Both offenses came up short time and again to start the quarter, with the Patriots slowly losing the field position battle as the teams traded punt after punt. Eventually, it proved too much, and the Jets defense managed to pick up their offense by putting points on the board. After an early snap left the Patriots lucky to maintain possession, Brady was forced to throw the ball away from the end zone on 3rd-and-13. Intentional grounding was called, and the Jets found themselves with two points.

Meanwhile, DB Sterling Moore managed to help the Jets more than the Patriots, making a hard helmet-to-helmet hit...on Devin McCourty. The Jets got an unnecessary roughness call for their trouble, while the Patriots' sophomore cornerback left the field and entered the locker room seemingly unable to move his arm. His return is questionable.

The Jets were not content with just two points, unfortunately. Cutting up the middle of the field both through the air and on the ground, Mark Sanchez and the Jets found themselves two yards from pay dirt on a third down. Mark Sanchez called a timeout much to the chagrin of Rex Ryan, but the team came back out and ran the right play. Mark Sanchez fell back seemingly to pass, and then rushed forward on a quarterback draw as Vince Wilfork was held just out of reach.

The touchdown gave the Jets a 9-6 lead, but it wouldn't last long. The timeout had given Tom Brady just enough time to work with. Finding Rob Gronkowski twice for 37 yards and Welker once for 12, the Pats found themselves in the Red Zone with a little help from an Eric Smith facemask. On 3rd-and-12, it was again Eric Smith who came up short, with Tom Brady finding Gronkowski for a third time on the drive, connecting for an 18-yard touchdown pass and going ahead 13-9 as the first half came to an end.

Patriots 6, Jets 0, End 1st: Pats Defense Staunch, Chad Ochocinco Off To A Hot Start

Winning the coin toss and choosing to defer, the Patriots found their bottom-ranked passing defense tested early. They came up short. Mark Sanchez would pick on Devin McCourty early and often, pushing the Jets into the red zone in rapid fashion, and nearly had a long touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes before the receiver was stopped as much by the yard line as by any defender (McCourty and Ihedigbo collided as Holmes picked up the reception).

As it had in Pittsburgh, however, the Patriots' defense proved quite a bit stronger with their backs up against the wall. A pair of incomplete passes and a short run left the Jets turning to Nick Folk to put them on top, but from just 24 yards away, New York's kicker missed for only the second time this season, shanking one to the left and keeping the game scoreless.

New England would end up faring rather better on special teams. With passes to the tight ends and Chad Ochocinco, Tom Brady and the Patriots took the ball into Jets territory on their first drive of the game before a penalty and a negative run set them back into a 3rd-and-17 hole. Brady's pass to Deion Branch was incomplete (and nearly picked off), giving Stephen Gostkowski a chance to go up early. While his attempt was from 50 yards, Gostkowski drilled it right down the middle for three.

After a short Jets drive was ended by a big sack from Andre Carter, the Patriots again put up points on their second possession, and not only was Chad Ochocinco in on the action--he was the star attraction. Finding himself wide open in the New York secondary, Ochocinco caught a long ball and then cut back inside to add to his reception, gaining 53 total yards on the play. Once again, though, the Pats would find themselves unable to find the end zone. A pair of questionable passes forced another field goal, and with just 36 yards to cover, Gostkowski put it through with ease.

Patriots vs. Jets: Brady, Sanchez And The Usual Suspects Battle For AFC East Lead

Usually these pregame articles contain lots of facts regarding each team's advantages and disadvantages, outline the key match-ups and offer some in-game elements to keep an eye on.  This week, there isn't much to say.

Well that's not true. There is plenty to say, it's just all been said so many times and these two QBs and coaches and wide receivers and offensive lines have met so often that it's actually become a bit predictable.

Maybe all the Penn State drama is affecting my sports psyche, but this week's Patriots-Jets game seems a little bit underwhelming.

Perhaps it's because the two teams have been so hot and cold this year that it's hard to assign them any type of identity. It could be because Rex Ryan has been uncharacteristically humble and subdued since he did what some thought was impossible and embarrassed himself when he retroactively guaranteed Super Bowl rings for a team he never coached. Maybe Bill Belichick's know it all antics, media-shunning and continued charade of hard-work-conquers-all mentality seem a little harder to swallow in light of Joe Paterno's fall...excuse me, crash landing, from grace.

No matter the reason, neither is the team it was a year ago when this matchup's tension was tangible. They are both good. They could both make the playoffs, or not. Week 10 is like the halftime of the NFL season. It's always nice to feel confident going into the second half , but unless you're winning or losing by forty, it's still anyone's game.

At the end of the day, one of these two teams will win, and one will lose; and the loser will be one game back with seven games to be played. We all want to think that this game is such an important one for the Patriots, because three losses in a row would spell disaster for their season. But would it? Really?

Is one game back really an insurmountable disadvantage with so many games to play in a division where Tom Brady's best competition is Ryan Fitzpatrick and Mark Sanchez? Fred Jackson has played incredibly for the Buffalo Bills, but Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson and Arian Foster can all tell him how that story ends. I'd count myself as not surprised if the Bills lose 4 or 5 of their last 8 games. And despite a three game win streak, the Jets look every bit as beatable as the Pats do right now.

Not to mention that the AFC East plays the AFC West and NFC East this year; all three divisions are currently up for grabs, with no decided favorite or clear advantage lying with any one team. The Jets, Pats and Bills will likely be fighting for a playoff spot until the very end of the season, so right now it's just not do-or-die yet. This game might as well be up to a coin toss. It would take a spectacular, earth-shattering performance by the Patriots' defense, most specially its secondary, to make a win in the Meadowlands seem overly significant.

A season sweep of the Jets would definitely give the Patriots a nice edge and confidence within the division, but that only illustrates why the Jets might be hungrier for a win.

The fact of the matter is that the Patriots' best is better than the Jets' best. If the Patriots can fire on all cylinders, even with the systemic and positional weaknesses they have struggled with, this game is theirs to lose.

But after the past two weeks of sub-par production from the offensive line, continued downright pathetic performance by the secondary and mediocre coaching, the Patriots haven't given anyone reason to believe they can go on the road and beat a hot Jets team.

My Prediction: Jets win the battle of defensive line vs. offensive line, Sanchez increases targets to Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes in light of the Pats inability to cover, Revis takes away one of  Brady's go-to guys (either Wes Welker or Rob Gronkowsi) and New England loses their third game in a row.

Patriots Injury Update: Nate Solder Questionable With Concussion

The New England Patriots will travel to East Rutherford on Sunday night to face off against their rival, the New York Jets. In a game with first place in the AFC East potentially on the line – depending on what happens in Bills vs. Cowboys – the Patriots may be without the services of right tackle and 2011 first round draft pick, Nate Solder.

Solder – the 17th overall pick – was added to the injury report Saturday with a concussion. He is officially listed as questionable for Sunday night. Offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer (back) and Ryan Wendell (concussion) also are listed as questionable, which enhances the impact of the Solder injury.

Ian R. Rapoport from the Boston Herald weighs in:

He's not a starter, so its not crushing. But Solder has had the role of third TE recently and the Pats had planned on pounding the rock. I expected him to play a lot. Now, he may not play at all.
